so i wont get easier/faster cut out of the flex 3401 vs my g220, even though it has a larger 8mm orbit ???

i only use LC CCS (blue backed) pads and either Menz 203, 106FF & 85RD to keep things simple

Using those pads and polishes with the Flex will yield you faster results, but not necessarily better.

I will be using it myself, but at the same time plan on making some dough on the weekends hitting up some of my friends rides as they always ask how i keep my car looking so clean(till the sprinklers hit it). Plus i keep reading so many good things on the Flex as well as how much time i will save in reference to not having one(current situation). Def see you have awesome prices and more than likely will go through DD.

I agree with this. I had a chance to try the Griots machine and WOW! We actually sanded part of the hood on my Passat with 2000grit and polished it out with the Griots. I find the 3401 tends to wander, like you are always fighting it. Yes, maybe it cuts faster, but its definitely not an enjoyable machine to use. If you change up the pads and polish you can do pretty much anything with a PC.

To each their own I guess. When I'm working the 3401, like I said, it's almost a natural extension of my arms. I don't have any issues with wandering, fighting it, or anyting else. My go to combo is the Uber orange pads and Menzerna 203 and it works like a champ everytime. It's kind of hard to explain, but I get into a groove with the thing and just feel like I'm working the paint over and massaging it to get the effect I want. If nothing else, at times, I wish it had a little more RPMs, but that's what the rotary is for.

i you don't need the power get a pc, takes a little longer but zero learning curve, although I was a rotary guy for nearly ten years before I got my first pc

Looks like i'm leaning to the 3401Base Kit, Phil...any codes to use when ordering?

BTW K1msta just sold his Flex 3401 for the same reason. We both rather use a rotary and in my case my Griots RO. K1masta is good enough to finish down with his Makita.

I started off with the old PC when i first started to take detailing more seriously. I had no need for anything more. As i started to take on side jobs, i realized after the first few details i need something with more cutting ability. I wanted to decrease the time it took to finish polishing, to make detailing other peoples cars worth while. I was going to buy the Flex 3401, but after asking for advise here i was convinced and took the leap and bought the lightweight Flex Rotary. It took some time to get used to, there was definitely a learning curve. But it was worth it, my detail times have been drastically reduced and i'm able to achieve results i was never able to get with a PC. Though the other day, i was detailing a black car and at first the rotary was doing a great job until i notice buffer trails. I came back with the PC and did a quick pass over the panels, and was able to clear up all the buffer trails from the rotary. The PC still comes in handy from time to time.

I'd start off with some sort of DA, get a better understanding of polishing and practice with that. Then i'd suggest a Rotary. this is just based on my experience.

I agree with dangler, whatever my rotary cannot finish, my PC will finish. flex 3401 is $$$ compare to PC, unless you do a lot of 1 step polish then I see no point of flex 3401. I love to have a flex 3401, but I have no room or need for it.

so if i have a pc that is about 7 yrs old, is it worth upgrading to say the griots polisher or a detailers domain newer version of the pc?

ive been itching to try the flex, but did they upgrage the pc in the past?

Yes, all of the DA's are much more powerful than the old models. With the new pads (surbuff) and new compounds and polishes (Megs 105/205, Optimum Spray Compound and spray polish) a DA can just about handle any paint.

If you finish down with Ultrafina and a 3m blue pad you won't need the pc to finish down.
