They are very durable. I couldn't tell you how many cars one can do with them. It was a few year before I recently reordered six each - 3" 5" and 6"
I bought one (the medium length wool; there are 3 different ones to choose from) and it has lasted me all season with no hint of wearing at all. I fully expect it to last a few years. Now, I am a weekend warrior, but I do tend to use wool when the need is there, which can be fairly often. Bottom line: I highly recommend them!
Hardly any shedding from mine. Very tough. They will bleed the black coloring so watch out what other pads you soak them with. I have a abot a half dozen orange pads that are a dirty camo green color now.
