    Hey everyone,

I know this has been gone over in many threads but I can't seem to get concise answers for my questions. I just bought a Makita 9227 which I am very excited about! However, I prefer 6 inch or smaller pads for any buffer and therefore need to get a new backing plate (already have CCS pads which are fine for now).

What backing plates are you guys using these days? I will be getting a 5.5" backing plate along with a 3.5" (or something similar). Basically, a regular backing plate and a small backing plate.

Thanks for the help in advance!

5.5" : The choices for most is the 3m UK backing plate (Phil has it) but for a cheaper alternative look at Gloss-It backing plate or Bens (Rubbish Boys) backing plate. I have Gloss-It one and love it!

3" : Uber 3" backing plate is great for small pads. On a rotary the smaller the pad the less cut it has due to angular velocities (RxW), if you get one of the foam backed 3" backing plates then you loose even more cut from the pads so I have read/found a hard 3" backing plate works better in 90% of situations than a 3" foam backed backing plate. Uber one is great, IMO.

If I didn't already have the 3m UK plate, I would buy the Rubbish Boy's ones. The 125mm, 75, and 50mm sizes. You can probably buy all 3 for the price of the 3M UK one.

Thanks guys, I will look at those you have recommended right now. I understand that smaller pads = less cut on rotaries, especially after using 4" pads with my PC to get a little extra cut and control.

In addition to these backing plates, would it be a good decision to get hard urethane plates as well?

For 5.5" pads no the foam backed ones are golden and all your need. Smaller pads, 3" BP, like I said go with a traditional one like Uber BP.

What do you think about this CG 3" backing plate?

    Rotary 3 inch backing plate

Also, I know that Phil has the uber 3" plate but where should I look for the Gloss-it ones?

You can get it from Gloss-It (sign up on the formum for the 15% off code) or you can get it from Ken (Autoworks Exclusive, you can just send him a PM for shipping and pricing; 911Fanatic)

CG one looks the same at the Uber one so it would work well also.

I am a member of Gloss-it forums, I just never go on there because of the "Gloss-it Only" mentality. I will get in touch with Ken, thanks for the info!

    I think I will re-read Dave KG's rotary tutorial today. :)
