I have a Jar of ROBE and the look of it on a car is a lot different then what im used to. It seems to give the car a glassy hard coating type of look. Is there other waxes out there that gives a simular look thats not a huge PITA to apply?
nothing near that price range. I hear it shares a similar look as vintage. But that has a learning curve too. How did you apply rboe? I use a foam finger app from ben. Works awesome. I've also heard of taking some distilled water at about 200 degrees f and spritzing the wax surface with it before swiping with an app to soften it up.
How are you applying it? Application does take a bit to get use to but once you have it down it is easy. Only wax I know that people compare it to is Zymol Vintage. Best way I have found to apply it is put the pot of wax in the sun for a bit, or under halogen lights to heat it up, when you put the applicator use fast circles to almost liquefy it. Spread it REALLY thing and wait 30 or so min and buff off. If you hit a hard spot mist with a QD or some water. Once you do it a few times it will get easier. Apply by hand is also good method, get a few bits in your palm and work it so melt it a bit and apply in a thin coating.
I heated the wax with low heat on my heat gun then quickly dabbed with my foam applicator and applied it on 1 panel at a time. tough part is the wax cools off rather quickly and becomes hard. I dont want to apply it by hand because i have naturally clammy hands.
You dont want to liquefy the wax just soften it up a bit. If you move your app over the wax surface fast you get it worked into the foam and should be able to apply it thin. Give it a go another time or two and you should get it. Vintage is only other wax, I know JL has said Raceglaze 55 is another one that looks like vintage but attracts dust.
If you see a area that may be too much, normally only seen the first pass after loading up the app, just go over it a bit and even it out. There is a learning curve due to the hardness of the wax but once you get it down, after few times, its golden. When I first used it, I hated it...but now I can work it like any other wax after using it a few times. Stick with it man! You can try misting the app a bit with some water to help spread it. When buffing off use a very short nap MF, something like a Megs Ultimate Wipe will work GREAT!
You just stopped me from putting it up for Trade.lol.Well i guess ill give it another try when the weather warms up. The look it gave was very different i noticed. It didnt have as much depth but the paint had a glassy/hard candy look about it.
That is interesting as most people say it is a very wet, high depth wax like a true nuba wax would be like....interesting.... Give it another try or two and if you dont like it then sell/trade it.
hmm i dunno..maybe it was just because it was really sunny the day after. I just know it didnt look like souveran. I like Souveran but it kills my Flake. So ill just keep that aside for Red and Black Cars.
For application, I'm a bare hands guy with RBOE. Others do stuff like hair dryers and foam applicators and whatnot, which I find too fussy. If I can avoid carrying yet another item around a car with me (like a hair dryer) while working, I do so. I pretty much use the method Ben describes on his website to the letter. I use a spoon, scrape some off the surface, put the shavings into my palm, and soften the shavings up with the thumb of my free hand. Spread it thinly. Like, thinner than you think. And leave it plenty of time to set up - minimum 30 minutes. I usually leave it closer to an hour. When removing, I do it in two stages, and during the second stage, I often carry a bottle of Meg's 34 with me to make it easier. Makes a big difference. Stick with it. Your patience will be rewarded, I promise. It'll get your flake to pop like crazy - it's like having the car under a magnifying glass. Besides - it's just cool to use a wax that was made by hand, in really small batches, by a guy in the UK in his kitchen. :headbang:
It may be hard to work with, but sometimes that makes the finished results that much more special. I would say that Pinnacle Signature Series II has a very similar look to RBOE and in my experience is very easy to use. I would personally stick with RBOE and get the application technique down pat, it is worth it!
