He wasn't looking for a fight, he was looking for the kid to spit shine his shoes for real. The kid took offense to it and he did himself in by throwing the first punch... along with dissing the old man's shoes, along with being disrespectful in general to someone older than him.

Moral of the story, don't be stupid and don't underestimate your elders. Show respect and you'll receive it in return.
