Mmmmmm...hi def, every time I hear about HD-DVD I think of the scene in Tropic Thunder where they're discussing hi-def formats and how it always comes down to whichever format a certain industry backs seems to decide the battle.

    Nice choice for the TV:thumb:

We're watching 300 on HD-DVD. You can find these discs pretty darn cheap on Amazon and ebay!

How could you Cooter? After all the advise given you succumb to mere aesthetics......
Panasonic VIERA TC-P46G10 - that's what you should've spent your money on.

Honestly, if the Samsung was a good TV, I'd be the first to congratulate you on making the choice you did, but as you can see by the smile used, I'm disappointed you've sacrificed looks for performance.

Congrats,.... A few months ago I picked up a Samsung 55" LCD and I have been VERY happy with it. Just wait until you hook up a BlueRay player, you will be blown away. Even non Blue Ray discs on a blue ray player look pretty damn awesome!

I don't know about you but Samsung HDTV sets are just as great as Panasonic's on our side of the pond. However, it may be different where you live. Believe it or not, not everyone gets the same grade equipment that us Americans do.

And as far as sacrificing looks for performance, they're both inter-related. You can't really exchange one for another. :shead:

Denzil, looks refers to the design of the TV, performance (as if I need to explain!) relates to the picture quality.
The two are very much NOT inter-related, and the US has always had the better spec of Panasonic Plasma, with some features not showing up on European sets until the next model launches - point in case, the THX mode, and even then, it's not in the same models.
Your G10 has it, iirc, whereas it's not until you pony up for a V10 here, you get the "benefit" of that setting.

I doubt, with the greatest respect though, that Samsung make a VASTLY superior TV for your market, yet make a so-so one for ours.

Then again, with more HD broadcasts over there, you don't necessarily see all the short-comings of the Samsung, but if you watch enough SD broadcast material, you'd see a greater difference between it and the Plasma. Equally, if you watch a lot of action movies on Blu-Ray, at 1080p, you'll find the G10 shows little to none smearing when the camera pans the scene, but a lot of blurry trailing edges on the LCD's - even the new LED-backlit ones.

    d00t Welcome to Detailing

I've been to a few tv-only stores (in the bay area they're called video only). And when looking at 4 different brands with the exact same specs (same size, aspect ratio, 1080p, 120hz) it makes me wonder why someone WOULDN'T buy samsung. It has the brightest and most crisp picture of any of the name brands I've seen. And this is comparing side-by-side-by-side.

    Great pick up heath!!

Bear in mind the stores will feed the TV brand they want to push with a better/easier feed than those people come in specifically for.
Then there's the issue over whether they've been touched at since removing from the box - manufacturers often defaulting it to the brightest, most saturated setting, in order to make theirs stand out under the typical lighting conditions these stores run at.
Unfortunately with Plasma, you can't really afford to do that straight out the box, since the panel needs gentle run-in for the first 100-200 hours.
As mentioned above, you'll see a lot of LCD's run with HD (B-R) CGI movies, which look superb on anything, but start putting more taxing movies on them, and you'll soon show up their short-comings.
Helps sell the B-R player too, and reinforces the 1080p marketing hype.

Any demo, should include broadcast SD so you can really get a feel for how good the brand's picture processing is - then you can sort the wheat from the chaff.

Still, if Cooter is honestly 100% totally happy with his purchase, then all that I've offered is moot, but I'd imagine if he'd went to a proper (no slight on Sears as a store) AV store, he'd have (a) found it hard to demo a Samsung, and (b) been able to truly compare the two technologies and brands, with movies he's familiar with, in a setting more representative of his living room. and come away with a different TV altogether.

I went and looked at the TV's and the Samsung had the better picture, to me. The Panny's looked great , but the Samsung really got my attention. I'm happy with it. I've been watching all kinds of movies on it.
    The picture looks nice.
