am i considered a pro? i was detailing at a dealership for about 5 years got out of the whole detail world for about 8 years. now i work at a body shop cleaning( not detailing ) the cars after they get painted. plus i detail at home on the side. so because at 1 time i did earn all my money from detailing but now my main source of money comes from just washing cars. so am i considered a pro?
Well let me ask you, do you consider your self a pro? I know, I know, I'm not answering your question at all. Infact, I'm turning it around and asking you the question but to be honest I don't want it to be up to me if you’re a pro or not, I mean I play a small part on it but I'd like for you to be honest, sincere with your self and with me and answer that question. Do you consider your self a professional detailer? I'd love to hear your answer. I mean your situation falls in one of those gray areas and I can make a decision but I’d love some feed back from you. In case you don’t consider your self a pro I’d also like to hear why (hope you don’t mine me asking).
well considering i am not detailing full time or the money i make from detailing is not my main source of money or a source of money that i even rely on i consider myself and very good hobbiest. with me being out of it for so long there are new products and techniques i still have to get familiar with. and not to offend anyone but if a hobbiest thinks they have the skills to compete with pro's let them take their chances. i am also a bowling and have entered regional pba tournaments where i am bowling against the pro's that are seen on t.v. and i have never come in last place. never came in first place either. but at the same time i was just as good as some of the pro's and better than alot of the pro's but i am still a amature. and i see this as being the same thing. if amatures think they have the skills as good or better than the pro's let them compete against them. you never know someone may just find out they are just that good and turn around and decide to start thier own detail shop or get a job in the field. letting amatures compete against pro's have alot of positive affects for the both. will give amatures more confidence in their skills and will keep the pro's on thier toes so am i considered a pro by this forum?
To do this contest properly you need to run it like a live competition, as if at a car show and all the cars would be lined up and judges judging them. This means that prior guidelines must be set and followed, just as if in a concours, if not followed then that entry is disqualified. For example it could be set that the "before" pictures must be off the car after it's been washed and dried because anyone could run that car through mud, sleet and dirty puddles and then take some "before" shots and their "after" shots will look that much more impressive. If this is a simple "wash and shine" then the rules must state that the prep work is only set at a one-step product. This though is difficult to monitor because anyone can SAY they did only a one-step but in reality did a 3 or 4 step process. So the best way to go would be to state that the car should show a marked improvement in paint correction. It should also show stain removal, etc. If a "before" picture shows marring when the picture is taken head on into the paint then the "after" shot needs to be of the same spot at the same angle in as close to the same lighting as possible. Do not allow pictures taken at one angle to show marring then take a another picture at a totally different angle to show how they have been "removed". Judge this as close as possible as to how judges judge a concours.
stevek the statement that I highlighted pretty much summarizes what your saying, one thing to add is that there has to be a certain level of trust. Now your saying your a hobbyist and well if you consider your self that then that is fine with me. Now I understand what your saying about letting amateurs, or what I like call weekend warriors or enthusiast a go with the pro's but I personally don't think it's a fair comparison that and in order to compete with the pro's you have to subscribe (pay) to compete with the pros. So if anyone considers them self’s a pro and would like to compete with the pros by all means your more then welcome you just have to subscribe. Now the trick is this if a pro wants to compete with the amateurs, weekend warriors or enthusiast that individual will not be allowed to compete. Well I appreciate the feed back Anthony, but that type of competition you speak of is not what these competitions are about nor do I want to take them to that level, but thank you for the feed back. Although from the pro's the expectation are quite high, I just don't want to implement a bunch of rules and regulations where individuals that do this for a living have to post a certain way. One thing I was very conscious of is that individuals that do this for a living don't have as much time compared to a person who does the odd vehicle here and there. A person that is doing this for a living has the mentality that time is money and they need to work effectively. Now if a professional is detailing a vehicle for a car show and they can afford some time documenting what they do by all means that would be great but most professionals hardly have time post a complete write let alone stop every five minuet to take a picture of what they are doing so that's why I didn't want to go over board with the rules. Comparing a concours to an online competition are two different things in my books, I find it hard to compare the two but that's just my opinion.
so i am qualifed to enter in monthy contest? i just remembered i didnt use the same user name as i do on the other forum. you know me from AG as detailgod.
Did you want me to change your name? stevek if you tell me you consider your self a hobbyist I can only trust that your being honest with me. I'm not going to go on a hunt to track your history down to prove other wise. There has to be trust and I trust you. So you said to me you consider your self a hobbyist and threfore yes you can enter the Monthly Competition.
i have nothing to hide. i ran a detail department at a dealership for a few years then i stopped detailing for awhile and just started to get back into it. and i still have not gotten my form back all the way yet. but still enough is bakc to make some extra change. right now i only do about 3 full details a month. so i would have to consider that a hobbiest. i just want to be clear on how the moderators of this site would categorize me
No wories stevek, I appreciat you being honest with me and all DB Representatives here will not view you any different, there is no reason to view you differently your just like all of us here. We all share the pation of detailing and that's what it's all about eace:
