been there done that. lets see where to start. Oh i know how about every person you meet is at one of the lowest points in their lives. They have just been robbed, stole something, abused some one, hit a kid, got in an accident. You become the poo dumpster for them. let alone every time you have to deal with a combative person you have hours of paper work. Every second of the altercation must be broken down in your report to appease your sargeant, Da, and Union. what took 5 min, ends up being 5 pages of writing. I'll stick with cars, they don't give me shit.

A long life time ago. I was a cadet from 18-21, and an officer from 21-22.5. I ended up moving from the small town to a larger city with the express purpose of going to college to be an officer in that larger town. The job i took to put me through college was so much more money, less stressful, and much nicer people. I never looked back. As a caveat, I am a forceful personality to begin with. The police training heightened that personality trait. Even to this day, I have a very dominant personality. I rub people the wrong way. <shrug> I would not like to see what i would be like with 20 years under my belt. It took a lot of self introspection to decide to get out. I enjoyed the work a lot. . What finally solidified my desire to get out is i was able to watch officers who did not get out (and should have) get divorces, become callous, drink, and in one case cross the line. I decided to not be them.
I have been doing it for going on 15 years and have found it to be very rewarding. Any time you're dealing wiht the public, it can be frustrating. I was lucky, I got to do 5.5 years in hte Traffic division getting paid to ride a Harley and doing Collision Reconstruction as well as teaching child car seat safety. I've got an incredibly easy assignment now that I'll probably stay in for about 3 years or so if I'm lucky. You NEED something constructive on hte side to do...the detailing has been great for me.
I'm not saying that every cop ends up that way, nor that it is not rewarding. By any stretch. I enjoyed it, I simply came to the realization that it did not suit me. Thank you for your service.
