I was lookin at a white 2001 VW jetta GLS 2.0 110k , and heres how it went KBB for excellent condition is $4100, owner asking $4600 Carfax is clean, no accidents but fail emissons many times (3) n then passed in a week later with all the record shown with no repairs Car is filthy, Black seat covers to cover worn beige seats. Its like the owner's second home! Car had a check engine light, but no driveabilty problem When starting the car, Battery light was on Check tires, 2 rear tires are bad, due to a tire plug very close to the sidewall. another due to a slow leak n the owner fail to notice it until its driven flat n causing damage to the sidewall Checked brakes, fronts 90% rear 20% So the car needs a detail - $400 a alternator -$600 a battery -$100 low rear pad lifespan - $100 2 tire -$200 a catalyst converter -$1000 fogged headlight -$100 Spider web paint chips on rear bumper -$200 paint reading good Total of: $2700 worth of repairs to get to excellent condition at $4100 Battery light on is problem with the alternator, n a fail alternator cause failure on battery Owner say its spark plugs for the check engine light, easy fix ( lie ) spark plugs will cause the car to misfire n check engine light will be flashing. car drove fine. car been to auctions a lot, why? no dealership wanna fix a catalyst converter then try to make profit. I didn't have a scanner with me, but im pretty sure its the CAT Owner says it just passed inspection, with brake pads at the Min, for safety reasons, needs to be change, and if you erase CAT faults, a week later, it will pass. Owner has two different brand of tires Why? cause the other ones are cheaper! Owner's car is filthy, so its need a detail!! so I offer him $2750 to be nice, cuz I get parts deal as a mechanic I hope all yous pick something up
I am a licensed dealer and sold cars for 25 years. This car will never be a cream puff. I would pass. The story on this car does not add up (to anything good). The red lights are flashing. I would rather pay top dollar for a nice car.
I wouldn't buy this car, it sounds like a problem car. You're looking for a car, not a bag of problems.
offer him $500 for it...and BTW, I don't know, but maybe you have to replace your brake rotors along with pads and brake wear sensors (that's how it is on BMW), and those rears cost $800 including parts and labor...
lemon. the mainland has so many nice cars man, don't settle for a problem car because its a bargain. sounds like a money pit. stear clear of it
the thing with a mk4 VW is that if the proper money is not put in to actually fix the problem, you will have troubles every single time you go to have it inspected. i'd rather pay more up front for a vehicle that is immaculate with a full history from it's owner rather that buy something with advice from a shadetree mechanic. and check to see if those window regs have been replaced with the proper units, there's nothing better than driving through rain and putting the window down for your coffee to have it go smashing into your door. those great VW memories all come rushing back to me now.
check engine might be the COILS (yes one coil per spark plug) those are not an $8 item get a VAGCOM and pull the codes to find out why the engine light is on. get on vwvortex forums and find someone local to pull the codes for you.
I would stay away from this vehicle ... Kyle ... you are so right about having a thickness gauge. I had a friend that bought a certified used toyota and she noticed that her rear bumper paint was chipping off. I inspected her vehicle and found that her rear hatch and quarter panel wasn't original and the paint was thin (less than 70 microns) and it didn't match well. She went to the dealership to fight about this issue (with all the info I gave her) and they are painting the entire vehicle at no charge and she gets to pick her body shop. Carfax didn't show any issues. Just because it's certified doesn't mean it's accident free.

BTW im a audi mechanic that islooking for a used jetta for my sister, I know what Im looking at and just like to share with those who don't. Im not trying to low ball anyone, but when you claim your car is in great shape, I look at your carfax n service history. Then I look at KBB n what you're askin for. then we go from there.
