well they told me 2mps was the fastest my phone lines could deliver and even if i upgraded to the faster service (only one above what i have) the speeds would be the same, its bell sympatico, we also have cable internet but i dont know if its any faster.

Probably a distance from the CO issue. That is the drawback to xDSL. Cable is not impacted by distance, but by the number of neighbors you have using it. The cable company can quote all kinds of numbers, however if you are friendly with the neighbors ask around and see who is using cable and what speeds they see.

My connection is 650 down by 130 up :( But I can still play xbox live fine, what do you need yours for? It's not even that slow.

Cable modem is by far the faster(fastest maybe) connection you can get as far as consumer level bandwidth.

I have the Road Runner/Digital Cable with free HD channels/Digital Phone package.

this is my speed from Ft. Hood, Texas (Central Texas) to Olympia, Washington, about 1700mi

and heres from Ft. Hood, Texas to Austin, Texas

the distance from my home to Austin (state capital) is 45-65 miles depending on the route i take.

and this is while im playing Call of Duty 4 with 17 other players, no lag at all, on a wireless network... unless the host is overseas, then im SOL when it comes to my Kill/Death ratio

    uncleglenny:
your upload speeds are always going to be low because, you're never sending as much data as the host server does. Sending text, images, video, java/flash apps are bandwidth intensive that are sent to you; you only send a request to view that data such as your IP address and other text only requests which are miniscule in terms of bandwidth

*Edit* Just for S&G's i selected new zealand.... road runner is good to me :p

ADSL never has upload as fast as download. Only SDSL (typically a business connection) provides up and down at the same rate. Most ISPs figure you download more than you upload in a home environment.

Dollar for dollar FiOS smokes cable. In most markets Comcast tops out at 16 Mbps, in FiOS markets Comcast has a 50/10 Mbps package for $143/mo. to compete with the FiOS 50/20 package for $140. However with Comcast you have to have their digital package, with FiOS you only have to commit to a year of service for them to string the fiber to your house. In our neighborhood they strung FiOS everywhere to replace the old copper.

I'd love to have that service, but FiOS does not exist in my area, Everytime i check for availability, i get a different city altogether. Time Warner has the monopoly here.

But i'll stick with my $104 package as much as i'd like to tell them to F-Off, im comfortable with them, no problems since moving to the new house 4 years ago.

There are fewer and fewer markets where true competition between ISPs exists. Unlike the whole ILEC/CLEC thing there is not a lot of incentive for a whole new build-out. It will be interesting to see if the IP over power lines thing ever comes to fruition.
