I'm going crazy, I hope you guys can help me. I've got a '02 GMC Sierra with a 4.8L V8. I was told yesterday that my #6 injector was clogged and it needed to be replaced. Does anyone know how injectors are numbered? I've tried searching for info. on it, but so far no luck. Also, has anyone changed injectors before? How difficult was it?
Before you go that route, try a can of BG 44K...Run your gas tank close to empty. Then pour the 44K in the gas tank and then put 8 gallons of gas in it. Do this at a gas station and pour the 44k first. Then take the car for a nice half an hour run on the beltway or the highway. See how that goes and get back to us with the results. Sean,,,,,,,,,,
rusty ... Try seafoaming your engine before you spend major money buying an injector. I have done this procedure in all my vehicles without issues. Google "seafoaming an engine procedure" PM me if you have any questions!! Good luck!!
As mentioned above the #6 injector would be cylinder number 6, also it wouldn't hurt trying the 44k that is some very strong stuff.
If those don't work do this; Remove the injector Soak it in a container with injector cleaner Make a jumper wire to energize the injector and blow all the gunk out... FYI injectros rarely to never go bad... I have never had on go bad personally...
Thanks for the advice guys. I'll definitely try the BG 44K first. I've used this once before and it worked great. I can't believe that I forgot all about it. I'm almost out of gas so first thing in the morning, I'll head over to the parts store and pick a can of 44K up. The service advisor said that #5 cleared up, but that #6 was clogged and that he even had the mechanic try to flush it out twice. I'm not sure what he used. I am pretty sure that the advisor said that it was a GM injector cleaner. Anywho, I guess that running the 44K wouldn't hurt. It definitely is the cheaper and easier route to take at this point. Thanks again for helping me out and I'll keep you posted as to what happens.
If its any type of gunk stuck in there try the above but its its any kind of particle like dirt it wont do a thing. Your best and cheapest bet to sent them out to get cleaned. Most places do ultrasonic cleaning and back flushes to get everything out. But I wouldnt do one. I would send them all out because they will reflow them all. Sounds like they did a BG Induction Service. If they truely ran that much cleaner through the injector than you are going to need a new one.
There's also the possibility they used GM Top Engine Cleaner which is just a tad bit stronger than Seafoam. 44k is strong stuff.
Very true but most dealerships have gone with BG now. Plus the Induction cleaner is pressurized and if that didn't knock the dirt out it pretty much is a done deal for the injector.
I have an update on my injectors. After going to the dealership and hearing their bad news, I was referred to a small shop that is owned by a friend's brother. They said they would charge me $75 just to look at it and if I decided to get any work done in it, they would apply that towards the work. Reluctantly, I said ok. I was really fearing that would give me bad news only because I've taken a huge hit in pay recently. So while they were pulling the truck into the bay, I prayed and lifted my worries up to the Lord. About ten minutes after they pulled it into the bay, I decided to walk over and see what they were doing. I love going to small shops here in TX, only because they're not so uptight about customers going over to see what's going on with the vehicle and because they like to jaw-jack with customers. I get there as he's diagnosing the problem and tells me what I already knew. Injectors 5 & 6 are misfiring. He then took 5 out and inspected it. After looking at it under better lighting he called me over and showed me what was wrong. The injector had a good amount of carbon build up on it and was preventing the fuel from entering the injector. All he did was clean off the gunk, blow air through the injector and put it back in. He repeated this process with the other one. After that he recommended that they run the BG Fuel Injector cleaner through it. After finding out how much it was going to be with everything, I decided to do it. The whole thing only cost me $150. That five time less than what I would have paid at the dealership!!! My truck now runs like new and I no longer shop around for cheap gas. It's Shell, Chevron or Texaco for me, from now on. Thank you Lord for answering my prayer!!
That is good news Rusty, glad it worked out for ya and got it fixed and didnt have to shell out some major cash.
Glad it worked out for you...Just run the BG 44K in your tank with 10 gallons of gas once a year and you won't run into this problem again...The 44k would have probably cleaned those injectors anyways. They just speeded up the process by cleaning them manually..That 44k is some good stuff...Also, look to run Chevron if you can..Chevron has some of the same chemicals that is used in 44k..The nice thing is that they have it in all the different octane brands while other companies only run it in their high grade gas...
