does my pc have one foot in the grave

purchased two 7424s for my self and a friend in august 2010....while working with him on a car saturday i noticed his unit (much less use) sounds very different then mine. also noticed my7336 i have had since 2002-03 sounds almost the same...is this what a bad bearing sounds like? how much longer will it last ? do i need to start saving for a flex or just replace the bearings
