Detailing in the Winter?

I was wondering where you guys detail in the winter time? A lot of the times when I see pictures it is at your house, and was curious do you guys have heated garages for the winter? Or do you know someone that lets you rent in the winter time? I live in NY and I couldn't imagine doing a 2 hour detail job let a lone a 12 hour detail in below freezing weather.

hi. as a person living in NY too like you, it's hard, especially if you don't have a garage... and if you live around the city, you probably park your car on the street. what i used to do is fill my two buckets with hot water for wash and use ONR, a very worthy product and wash my car on the streets. passers by always look and stare at me weird. lol

 

LOL.. so jealous of cali and people living south, they can do their detail all year round..

 

Detailing in the winter sucks. Period

My garage isnt heated but I have heaters in there. It still isnt very pleasant to do, and to me I lose that good feeling, I just want to get it done when it's -20 in my garage.

 

come to ny in january and Ill show you. You pay for the ticket Ill give you a place to stay for a week or two! Im about an hour and 30 mins from the city so you can visit there as well

Abd that is an invitation, you just have to detail my car or give tips haha

I would say you could bring your detailing stuff with you, but I think you might not pass the 3 bottles of 3 ounces on the plane.

do you charge more in the winter?

 

what type of heaters do you use ? at football tailgates i see ppl hook some type of heater to propane tanks, low cost solution but wouldn't think its safe for an indoor garage.

 

Also for the people that detail during real winter(most of CA and down south people need not answer ) how do you clean off the salt under the car?

 

Undercarriage:
After removing dirt, road grime, and etc neutralise the effects of the acidic road salt on the suspension / undercarriage (See also Salt and Road salt)
Methodology
•Thoroughly spray an undiluted d-limoene based (citrus) cleaner (P2IS Total Auto Wash) and let it soak in; remove by thoroughly rinsing with water. If you have a pressure washer available, fill tank with d-limoene based (citrus) cleaner and spray undercarriage (do not use excess pressure as water may penetrate crevices and seams where it cannot drain, causing corrosion), let it soak and then remove with plain water
•Spray undercarriage with (POR-15 Marine Clean™) one application will leave no residues, noxious fumes or flammable solvents (Canada-POR15.com)
•Apply two coats (allowing first coat to dry) of a rust inhibitor paint (POR-15 Rust Inhibitor, allow drying between coats.
•Spray after a wash, and before detailing for best results, a low-gloss, dark finish that Adam’s Invisible Undercarriage Spray leaves behind - Car Wax, Car Polish, Auto Detail Supplies - Adam's Polishes

 

Whats the best way to get under there though? It would be tough to get a pressure washer gun underneath a car, unless you have some kind of large ram or lift in your garage.

ONR is a must.

 

i go to this car wash place where you do your own wash using their washer and brush, u just turn the dial.. i just use their pressure washer that also spits out their soap amd then rinse with water. NEVER EVER EVER EVER use their brush, everybody uses that brush on any part of their cars. I just then go home and use ONR using two bucket. hope this helps.

 

For washing I do it outside the garage. I hook up garden hose to water heater drain (this is warm water not hot). I drain about 10-20 gallon to get rid the sediment that may be there afterwards it's very clean water. BTW, I only use this to rinse off.
Put rubber surgical glove and thick rubber glove (for washing dishes) on and your 2 buckets with suds and warm water. Now you are ready to wash, this works in Seattle when winter is usually in 30-40.

For detailing, I bring my oil-filler radiant heater into the garage and close the door. Not sure if force fan is OK since there is the glowing part that makes me wonder if it's safe in the garage (just in case there is gasoline fume).

 

To help keep my car clean in the winter it's ONR. I also learned a trick to use PB's Bug Squash as a pre soak. If I get really lucky my friends will let me use their garage when they want one of their cars cleaned. Heated garages are wonderful things. I must have one when I grow up.

 

Take it to the DIY place, pressure wash the sh!t out of it to remove all of the nasty salt, then come home and ONR it in the heated garage.

I just use one or two space heaters in the garage, within about half an hour it is warm enough to wash in and be comfortable.

I got a heater in my garage, I can detail all year around :thumb: But I use the ONR system during the winter :shrug: some times.

 

I have radiant Heating tubes in my garage. It almost makes it too hot.
