I wasn't sure what section this would best fit in, so I just put it here. I have a 1972 VW Super Beetle. I did some basic bodywork and I'm going to have it resprayed for cheap in the next couple of weeks. It's not gonna be perfect, there's a few dents and stuff that I'm not gonna bother getting out and I put on the body filler too thick in a few places as well, but the car will still look 100x better than it used to. My goal was cheap, so I'm re-using some old rubber parts that were in good shape and of course all the old aluminium trim. On the rubber parts (there's actually only 2 of them, they go under the blinkers) there is some overspray from a previous paintjob on them. How would you suggest me get that overspray off? Example: I also want to shine up the old aluminium, the strips down the side of the car and the emblems. It's kinda tarnished looking, and I want to make it shine again. I have Mother's Mag and Aluminium polish laying around, I'll give it a shot first but somehow I doubt it'll work. Example: And for the heck of it, the car as of a week or so ago. Some more welding and bodywork to do, most of that will be tackled by a shop, as well as the painting. Those parts don't look to pad. Couple of things you can try to do. Try the billet aluminum polish but that might not be enough. You can also try some # 0000 steel wool and metal polish to help loosen up the grime or try a more aggressive metal polish. You can always use metal polish in combination with a small white pad on a DA like a PC to help yield better results. I'm sure the bug is going to look fantastic when it's all said and done.
Try laquer thinner to remove the paint from the rubber. As for the emblem, do you have any kind of metal polish? I have a freind who has a 72 Super Bettle. He has owned the car for over 30 years. Thet really are awesome cars IMPO
I have that Mother's stuff, but nothing else. Is there any type of metal polish you would recommend? Yup, I love this car It's my first car (although I have an '09 GTI that's my daily), I learned to drive on it as well. OH! And there's some old chrome parts as well, just faded a bit in some places. Would a chrome/metal polish work on these as well?
It should work just fine. In the event that it doesn't work you will need to step up to a more aggressive polish just like you would in correcting a vehicle.
Thanks for the tips! I'm taking the car to a shop tomorrow for an estimate on welding, some finishing bodywork, and paint. Hopefully it'll be done soon, I don't like having a car in pieces.
Well, the Mother's did a great job on the emblem, it shined up really nicely! But the rest of the aluminium ins't shining up like the emblem. It gets a bit more shiny, but it doesn't look as good as the badge does. What's a stronger metal polish I could pick up? Preferably something OTC so I can just run and get it today.
Try this on metal. Nevr-Dull<SUP>®</SUP> Wadding Polish They sell it in walmart in the auto section. Can't wait to see the car finished up. good luck :thumb:
