Hey DB Im looking for a new point and shoot camera for detailing. Im not looking to spend a lot for this camera, because I want a Canon T2i in the near future. My 5 yrs old sony 7.2 MP is overdue, but now theres too many choices for me to choose, so I kinda need some help. im looking to spend $100-$300. Thanks
I would save it up until you can buy something nice. Just my 2 cents. After having used a DSLR, nothing else would work for me.
I agree, if you could save up for a nice camera it will be awesome. If not just get a decent camera (sorry no advice on which kind, google some review sites for cameras and reference them with other sites?)

Check out a Panasonic ZS3. Its a travel zoom. It has a very nice LCD and has a very nice zoom. The Canon you're looking at is suppose to be a good camera too.
I'm a huge P&S nut, my collection is down to 10 or so now. I've shot tons of picutres and compared them side by side. If you have a older Sony with a Zeiss lens, you aren't going to get much more IQ in any newer camera in the $100-$300 range. You will get image stabilization and possibly a wider angle lens. The Sony's in the 7.1MP era were really nice and clean image sensors that did very well in low light. Today's 14MP crap is just extra noise and larger file sizes. If you have that itch, buy something from somewhere with a liberal return policy and take some side by side shots, I think you will be surprised.
If you want a T2i, then there's no point in getting anything less until you can afford it. Besides, it's not about MP or the camera for the most part. You most likely can't tell the difference between anything 6-10 MP. If you learn a bit about photography in general, it'll carry you a long way even with a crappy camera
Look into the Canon Loyalty Program. Basically if you have an old Canon camera (working or not), you can send it in and you can buy a refurbished camera at 20% less the refurbrished price. I just ordered a 5DMKII for almost $1000 off. Sometimes the refurbished cameras or just dented boxes.
I echo Ben's opinion. You can still do quite a bit with a 7.2 MP camera. If it were me, I'd just save up because the P&S camera you purchase to replace your Sony and hold you off until you get your DSLR will just stop being used once you get your DSLR.
