So I have used Meguiars Wheel Brightner for a while and other acid based cleaners when tackling nasty brake dust. My question is does anybody out there have a simple way that they can tell whether a wheel is safe for acid based cleaners or not? I still find myself touching the wheel and triple checking what kind of finish it is. Anyways, just curious if anybody had any tips. Thanks.

Keep doing what you are doing. Take the time to make sure you know what kind of finish is on the wheels. Happiness is never having to say you are sorry!

now anyone can correct me if im wrong but i believe all stock oem wheels are painted clear coated wheels or chrome so you can use wheel brightner on any stock wheel. if thier after market rims then you should test them 1st

yeah, usually it's custom wheels that might be a problem...But I still wouldn't use WB on high end exotic cars...

Use a metal polish on a clean wheel surface if it turns black its uncoated. Most clear coated and chrome finish surfaces are 'safe' for an acidic wheel cleaner.

If the surface finish is compromised (kerbed, deep surface scratches, etc) do not use an acidic cleaner as it will permeate and you may compromise the structural integrity of the metal
