    Guys,

I'm looking at a used makita that has been used for 9 months (light wood work use). What items should I be inspecting/verifying before buying it?

I would highly stay away from any polisher that has been used for wood work. Theres a good chance that sawdust or whatever can get stuck somewhere and eventually may find it's way out when you're polishing. Not a good idea if you ask me.

make sure its the 9227 first. if its a good deal and runs just take it apart and clean it up, blow it out and start polishing.

How much are you getting this for? Makita's are that too much so it would have to be a decent discount, as xfactor said saw dust has its way of getting into everything and can cause issues with bearings and gears. If you have it in your possession best think would be to look it over, look in the air vents to see if you see dust, maybe take the head off to expose the bearing/gears and see if there is alot of saw dust or any in the head unit. If it all checks out clean and the price discounted is large enough that you think it is worth it then go for it.

yeah you definitely wouldn't want sawdust under your pad when you're polishing

guys ... just got off the phone with the guy. I was under the impression that it was used for wood work, but he actually used it for detailing for a few months.

He lost his detailing business after a bad accident and he's getting rid of it. He's asking for 110 and he said that he will disassemble it so I can verify the gears/bearings and other stuff.

I've scheduled an appointment for Saturday.

    Thanks for the advice guys!!

Sounds like a good deal, just look over all the gears and bearings or any wear...there should not be any visual wear almost after a few months...also check the wire as it comes into the body as this is a common issue with them. Easy to fix problem but none the less a problem with them.

Look at the state of the carbon brushes, which is the two black round things on either side that look like you need a screwdriver to open them. Know what I'm talking about?

I know exactly what you are talking about ... I actually inquired about their condition and he mentioned that he will give me a screwdriver to open the head to verify them ... he sounded knowledgeable about the tool, so I think it should be fine.

Anyone mind to post a pic of how the brushes are supposed to look like if their are in decent shape? Thank you guys!!

Does anyone know if the refurbished ones are marked as such, anywhere on the body? I've got a line on one also, for a good price.

I think if you were to buy it from a dealer than MAYBE it would be marked as refurbished, otherwise if you are buying from a private individual seller there is a good chance that it won't be marked and you will have to take his word for what he says.

Got mine at a pawn shop a couple of months ago for under $60.00 and the only problem was a repaired cord. Looked pretty new and sounded OK at pawn shop when plugged in. Soft start and speed selector work fine. If it last a couple oy years I'll be happy. I look often in these places for bargins and most have a 30 day guarantee.

buy new, don't worry about anything, call and complain when it breaks.

I would buy it new, but with the money I save I can buy decent backing plates and uber pads. I'm detailing on a budget ... if there's such thing ... lol

i'm a fan of purchasing accountability. if my stuff breaks, i know who to call. i have found that i end up spending less money when i spend more up front.

    how much is this polisher?
