What on earth has happened here?

My boyfriend left the sunroof halfway open on his 2005 Passat wagon a few days ago, and of course that coincided with the night that we got loads of rain :p So his carpet and front seats (leather) got soaked. He left his car on for a few hours while he was in class with the heat on full blast and the seat heaters on, and that's when I noticed that the leather looked like this:

It felt kinda hard and tough too. I should note that the bottom of the driver's seat was replaced (due to the seat heater burning it) and it looked perfectly fine.

The seats have finally dried out now, and they look better, but some areas still look like the above photos. Does this mean that the leather isn't completely dried out yet? Or that it's permanently damaged?

    Thanks,

    Clark

Looks like the seats are a bit stained fro the water. Maybe try cleaning and conditioning them and see what happens.

It was probably pretty hard rain, and dried out the leather and left contaminants behind. As mentioned, try cleaning and apply a good conditioner.

It may also be possible that the seats just got too much heat.

Yeah it was a pretty hard rain, so I imagine that the rain in combination with all the heat from the seat heaters could've done that. It's supposed to get a bit warmer later in the week, so maybe I'll get out there and see what cleaning and conditioning the seats will do and report back.
