  1. im kinds new to this forum and this is my 1st thread/post so i figure why not start it about the most popular guy in detailing. even though im new ive spent alot of time on here looking at alot of great work from alot of great people (ie paul, clark, todd etc etc) but ive gotta say in my opinin paul daltons work has got to be the best. so here my question how does he make those cars look so good? forget the marketing part and how much he charges and i dont want to hear about that he photo shops his pictures because if he does im sure every one else does (i know i would) just look at his work it speaks for itself. my only pet peeve with paul is that he doesnt do any write ups who on here wouldnt love to see one am i right? how does he get the cars paint to glow like that i see alot of people using the same products he uses (ie menzerna cleaner fluid crystal rock) so why do his cars look so much better? does he have some secret product that he made in a lab that no one else has? any ways if he does i dont blame him for not sharing it i would just like to know what hes doing that puts his work one step above every one else. and paul if you read this all i got to say is keep up the great work, more posts please and at least one write up and one last thing :worship2:

There is other people's work on here and other detailing forums just as good if not better. Plus atleast others on forums help you, all he does is promote products.

there are 2 art forms when it comes to online presenting of details. the first is obviously the polishing. if you can properly work and finesse the different polishes, and finish with a good jeweling polish, that is 99% of the battle.
the second, and most important for online presentation, is having the proper eye for taking an excellent photograph. i believe paul hires a photographer. fancy lenses, knowing the proper angles, and lighting can do wonders for a photo.

Because the exotic cars he works on has less orange peel than the low-high cars we work on, resulting in a better looking finish. It isn't anything he's doing, if you put 2 of the same cars side by side, same products, etc, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference from any other skilled detailer vs. Paul Daltons detail.

EDIT: And also, like Pektel mentioned, there is a very high end camera with professional lighting vs. a P&S camera that makes a big difference.

One word: PERCEPTION - which is very subjective. In addition, you can't possibly tell the true quality of a detailing job from the pictures. Although I do agree with the fact that taking professional quality pictures (e.g. by hiring a professional photographer) can have an effect on the appearance of the vehicle and influence the viewer's perception.

  8. i have been on other forums and i have seen other great detailers and i agree he doesnt seem to be has helpful as others but i think if you were to put his detailed cars next to others they would have a slight advantage. but like i said its just my opinion there are some great detailers out there (clark also has great work) but its funny because people on here either love paul or hate him or maybe they just hate on him. but thanks for the repley

Actually, two words: Perception + Marketing

  10. i did say forget about the marketing and look at just the work. plus if he has a pro photographer and so do other detailers it would come back to which car really does look better. ps its nice to see another 951er on here

Well the threads intentions seem like good intentions but consider this the only warning I'll give. Should this thread turn to a bashing session I will deal with the individuals as I see fit, I expect this thread to be respectful, from beginning to ending. Should any one here forget to be respectful I assure you, you will be dealt with accordingly.

So, the only warning I'll give on this thread. You all know what's expected of you and remember if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything!

Leave Paul alone, you all know you would like to be in his posistion... both professionally and financially.

i don.t think anyone on here is "hating" on paul. he has marketed his name very well. enough to the point where the average affluent person believes him to be the best in the business. although his results do not disappoint, i will argue the fact that those results can be achieved by more than just paul. again, i am not knocking paul.s work, as it is some of the best out there. but to put him at the pinnacle, the "end all, be all" detailer is an insult to those who are just as good.

you cannot remove marketing from the equation, and expect an answer you were hoping for, as marketing is really the only answer to why he is perceived as the best.

I don't think it is about hating Paul, I don't as I don't even know the guy personally. I definitely do admire his work (and of many others here) and his ability to make a name for himself, but I do believe that perception is subjective and marketing is an important factor that influences that perception, it is part of the psychology of business. I also think that to say that his work is superior compared to those of others here who use the same products (which include some highly respected members and sponsors of this forum) is a bit too strong. Welcome to the forum and good to have another member from the Inland Empire. Peace!

Valid points. A lot of us here can and do provide the same level of paint correction and detailing as Paul... the type of car IMHO has no bearing.

BUT... people tend to forget that PD has helped give high end detailers a good rep with his own publicity. Im not on his junk and I dont know him personally but im just saying that his image has in some way helped our hobby/profession.

I disagree, none of my customers know who he is and your work is what gets you paid. I was charging people over 500.00 back in the 80's for exterior correction only and had no problem selling those jobs when I had my shop. It is all about how you sell yourself, what kind of reputation you have, and most of all the level of your work.
