what about CA car dusters?

Those wax impregnated wool brushes, will they safely remove dust without harming the finish?

What do you use when a clean car sits outside and just collects some dust or the dreaded tree pollen?

No! Don't use one. That waxy yard attracts dirt and rubs it across your delicate finish causing unnecessary marring. I would use a Waterless Wash. You basically spray & wipe. They are formulated with special buffering surfacants that will not cause harm to your finish. I like this one HD Touch: http://www.3dproducts.com/HD-Touch.html

Works great as not just a Waterless Wash, but also a Quick Detailer, Clay Bar Lubricant & Interior Spritzer for your dash and even light fabric soiling. Has a great smell and leaves behind a little bit of slickness/protection.

Those California Car Dusters, you refer to, were the thing to use over 40 years ago, when paint was acrylic lacquer (soft) and acrylic enamel (hard), and very few people Detailed vehicles at the level today..

They did work and removed the dirt that fell on the car to a certain extent, but if the car was hot, it melted the wax on the fibers and made a mess, if the car was too dirty, it only took so much off and left the rest, and of course, anytime you move dry dirt around on paintwork, you can for sure expect to get scratches - light ones for sure, but still get them..

Back then, most people were content to just dust off the vehicle and not look at the scratches as much as we do today...

Auto Dealers were also great fans of these Dusters and went over their vehicles that were inside the Showroom every day with these things...

As David has so aptly advised, the best alternative is to do a rinseless wash or even wash the whole dang car if its that dirty...

We have all gone through the phase where we hated to see even a little dirt on our car every day, but most of us have now graduated to products that keep the paint really glossy, protected, and not attract as much dirt/dust, as the normal products out there today...

    Good luck with this !

    What would be better?

The car has sealant and wax on it. It gets dust and pollen on it.

What's the best way to remove this light surface dirt and not remove all that wax?

Hose the car off and use a jelly blade to dry it.

Use a QD and MF to clean it.

Use a waterless no rinse product.

My friend, a body shop pro, swears by Meg Ultimate Quick Detailer and says he refuses to wash his hot rod any more. Although that seldom gets very dirty.

What would be better - for what ???

    Clean it only?

Clean it and possibly scratch it?

Clean it and lessen the chances of scratching it?

I know lots of people that like to use a Quick Detailer and microfiber to wipe down their vehicles all the time. This certainly will clean it and some QD's even claim to add a layer of something to help protect the finish..

This works for them and satisfies their needs...

They may not necessarily care if they might be introducing small, hairline scratches into their paint... Maybe they wont be... There are too many variables to say with full purpose, that this ----------- will give you this----------- result....

The whole purpose of using a waterless wash or a real wash is to remove the dirt with something that has high lubricity to clean and lessen the amount of scratches that can come from rubbing dirt on paintwork...

    Dont overthink this....

What are Your needs for this car? Decide and go from there...

I threw my CA Duster and jelly blade out a long time ago. Dry the car with a metro blaster or leaf blower then some QD and a MF drying towel, not a jelly blade. For removal of light dust I like Megs Ultimate Wash and Wax Anywhere, as it is a WW and contains wax, I also like Ultima WW. I stopped wiping may car down with QD and a MF towel at car shows and meets because of swirls and light scratches. Now the car stays dirty, unless I wash it with soap and a hose.

How do you think Optimum No Rinse compares to these two?
