My first show and shine on DB I hope you like The car in question is a Volkswagen Touareg 5.0 V10 TDI in a rather nice grey colour which belongs to my boss. On arrival Saturday afternoon and it wasn’t looking too bad (or at least not as bad as I have seen it). Showing just the average country lane muck Arches were the same And the wheels a few miles of brake dust And also, unfortunately some damage from a scrape a few weeks earlier I basically had the car for about two hours on Saturday (before the light went) and all day Sunday and with it being such a large car I decided to go for a good wash, more of an improved gloss level and some protection. Started out mixing a strong mix of CG Citrus wash in a chemical sprayer This was applied to all the lower surfaces The wheels and under the arches It sticks really well at about 10:1 lifting the muck from the surface, worth mentioning it would probably affect your LSP at this strength though Next up the PW and wash equipment was assembled. I still have premixed AB SSF & CG Maxi Suds II that I’m using which seems to work well. The two bay water filter as always was connected up, This has really improved the foaming action and buckets suds but only immediately after a recharge/re activation leaves the car mark free but it does really help. Now on the drive home like all men I had been playing will all the buttons and had already eyed this one up for helping with the first task Which helps to foam the arches, all cars should have air suspension Car was foamed all over including the arches heavily The car was left to dwell for a few mins while I used an old brush to agitate the arch liners This was then rinsed off with the AB chassis lance Next the body was rinsed off, at this point in my haste it hadn’t occurred to me with the suspension up the roof was way to high for me to rinse off. So out with another essential detailing tool which got used quite a lot over the next few days The car was fully rinsed and then foamed and rinsed again. Next up with the light fading fast I assembled the usual wheel brush set with the addition of a Raceglaze deep wheel brush The wheels were then washed with a double strength Megs Hyper Wash solution The car looking much better now Deciding I had a few mins of daylight so out with my stage one SchMitt and a bucket of Megs Old Spice A quick pic just before I put it away for the night (the automatic lights activating when I put the ignition on The next morning early I drove the car out and filled a bucket with warm water adding a Sonus green clay bar and the sprayer of 50:50 lat touch. Using the warm to keep the clay working and my handies warmer (it was about 4 degrees outside) The car wasn’t too bad this was after half the bonnet Any visible areas of tar were treated with Autosmart Tardis Just spray on And watch the tar dissolve The wheels were then cleaned again with Megs wheel brightener to get them properly clean on the insides I washed the car over again with Megs Old Spice (OK so it say #62 on the front) using the stage 2 SchMitt and rinsed it off NOTE: I had lowered the suspension down but still felt safer leaning over from the ladder Now it was time to start the process of adding a bit of gloss. As the weather was nice all machine correction was done outside today Today’s products were to be 3M Ultrafina and some new pads I sourced from Rubbish boy Ben’s shop. Waffle pads Red for finishing and Orange for polishing. The plan today in preparation for a up and coming test of the new style one polish products I thought I’d try varying the pad to increase cut. Paint on the vehicle was quite high all over ranging form 120 to 210 all over, except for the passenger front door which measure a consistent 320 all over, a possible factory blow over was my guess. The vehicle wasn’t too bad the worst areas of swirling found on the rear passenger side (sorry poor attempt at a 50:50) A scratch on the rear passenger door was reduced whilst only removing about 6 microns Before After Do you remember Well the pad combo did me proud on removing the transfer paint, I left a few scratches in due to not having a plastics gauge Well chuffed, nice and glossy with an acceptable amount of defect correction to make it worth while. As the temp dropped I decided to dress the tyres with Swissvax Pneu and arches with Megs Hyper Dressing cut 2:1 (again after playing with the suspension) Now in my new garage (which is way short of finished but I got a car in it yeah) LSP for this would something I have had great success with on my own car, major league durability Polycharged Carlack NSC followed by layers of Polycharged Carlack LLS The AIO was applied thinly by PC and a Sonus SFX 2 pad and buffed off a panel at a time. You can see here the thin pc applied layer A little help to buff the AIO off And it was starting to look fine Excuse the gratuitous first Megs banner reflection shot I then added a thin layer of the PC’d LLS by hand on a yellow foam applicator and buffed off after a panel. Whilst the first layer was curing I took the opportunity to break my Zaino duck all be it just on wheels this time ZAIO was hand applied to the wheels using a MF over foam applicator (to add a little bite) Pretty smart already and then a layer of of Z CS was liberally applicated and left to dry I can’t wait to roll Zaino out on a few cars in the future I did a further two more layers of PC’d LLS about an hour apart So time now for a few (**cough**) garage afters the time now about 21:30 Nice big badge Next morning I was up early to go to work and rolled the Touareg out Looking smart in the frosty morning light The sun came out whilst at work so lucky I had the camera for such a possibility I thank you for taking the time to read. Like Concerns and Suggestions welcome as always
Great write up Epoch :applause2: wow very detailed :druling: Man you guys are lucky, you get to use Tardis :acry2: I'd love to get my hands on some of this stuff but so far it's a tad difficult to get...for now that is. You did a great job at that vehicle, specially at the area that was all banged up, sure made a big difference there :thumb: Oh the picture of your little girl helping is priceless, so cute. Thank you for sharing with us and you did a great job :thumb:
Thank you Nica Yeah we are lucky here on Tardis, after seeing the PB boys effortless tar removal i had to get some. I watched my little'un like a hawk in case see dropped the cloth, but she put it back on the worktop when she got bored. Made me proud
Very nice work on a great car! Love your detailed writeup and all the pictures! The car came out great, looks fantastic in the sun. Metallic poping great. How do you like polycharger? I have some, but haven`t used it yet. What products have you tried it on?
I'm a bit of a fan of Polycharger, it's one of those products it may not add much but what it adds is spot on. It adds a little clarity and makes water bead like crazy. I have some of the CH2 to try on some Mothers Reflections topcoat soon. so far though the only thing i've tried is the Carlack, i did my dad's car with polycharged AIO only and that lasted for 3 months (still beading). I have 4 layers on my car and they washes up great 6 months on. hello sir I did a post update on DW the other day, it's coming on well just seems to be taking so much time!
Nice work as usual Jon. Nica, I think Mark V Quik Solv is a similar product to the Tardis and should be easier to get hold of in your part of the world.
Thanks Ben As stated them pads work really well, the orange on on the rear platic biting well, but i worked for quite a while being weary of heat build up and it worked a treat Thanks Calgary it was lucky really as most of the damage was paint transfer onto the vehicle, which is relatively easily removed. It will need major work to fix completey but it looks a lot better now anyway.
Oooh thank you for the tip, I'll look into this product and see how it compares and see if I can get my paws on it :thumb:
You are more of a man than I... would not be caught dead detailing in 4 degree weather... awesome job on the whole thing!!! fantastic results
Great job! Love that Touareg TDI. It has aenough torque to pull a Boeing 747... Don't beleive me - check out a video on Youtube - Top gear show.
