Just wanted to know if anyone on here has any information regarding the use of North American tools such as Porter Cables and Makita's in Asia, specifically Hong Kong. An opportunity has arised for me and I have been invited to detail a few cars in Hong Kong, and I would like to know if a regular transformer and plug adapter is all that is needed to make them workable there.

    Thanks in advance!

Just make sure the transformer got enough watts else buy a 220v flex lol

A quick google shows that hong kong is using 220v/ 50h. You will need a voltage transformer rated approximately 1.5-2 times the wattage of your 110v tools to run smoothly.

For example, to run a PC, you will need a 700w voltage transformer. To run a makita, you will need a 2100 voltage transformer.

kyoshiro: I would love to get me a Flex!

    dschia: Thanks for the info!
Just did a search online, I'm assuming something like this should work?
    Autoswitching Converter/Transformer

Base on the transformer description: "For use with motorized and electronic appliances rated up to 50 watts", it is way underpowered to drive your power tools.

To run a PC, you will need something like this- LiteFuze convertingbox 1000 Voltage Converter Transformer

To run a makita, you will need something like this- LiteFuze convertingbox 2000 Voltage Converter Transformer

The 2000w transformer i used to have is weighing at 14kg so you might want to consider the feasability to travel with one. The new litefuze converting box is very much lighter though.

dschia: Thanks for the link, you're a life saver! How are things in Singapore? I haven't been back to Singapore in over a decade and a half!

911Fanatic: If we can line up enough cars there, I would be glad to take you along and introduce you to the rest of the world!!

kyoshiro: Thanks for the heads up Aldric! Will probably get one here just so it's something I can check off my list and not have to worry about when I get there. But I will definitely keep that in mind. Might have to PM you if there's anything else I need :shead:

Any hints on what you'll be working on out there?

So far there's a pair of Porsches lined up. Depending on the work they need and how I do for time, I'm hoping to fit in one or two more vehicles while I'm there.
