Ok, so I went to a detailing meet awhile ago and met a couple cool guys. Since it didn't focus on polishing, I had one of the guys contact me about learning how to polish and various aspects of detailing, he was brand new to it but very interested in learning how to do it. So we finally met, and used his G35 as the test mule, he already had all of the tools including a Makita. He had had the car "detailed" which means absolutely nothing. I have no idea what the previous detailer did, but apparently it was next to nothing, it was intense enough to leave holograms but still not aggressive enough to even diminish the RIDS :shead: First off, I'm really sorry about the pictures. I didn't take many because I was getting pissed off that the panel looked perfect after I polished it, but the flash seemed to be making fake holograms. Figured it out later, I smudged the lens with my finger  Combo was meant to remove RIDS: Tools: Makita 9227/ Various backing plates Uber Yellow/Menzerna Powergloss Uber Blue/ 50/50 Menz. 106FA/PO85RD IPA wipedown after every section Before, damage was much worse: Some Deep RIDS at the top: During, we tried to take off the spoiler, but you can see how that worked out: And this is how we kept our extension cords in place, bottom one kept falling out: Afters: Mike working: And the results: My side: Sorry, no full car shots it was too dark out, but Mike did an awesome job :mounty: Maybe he can provide some full-car shots soon :thumb: Anyway, here's the last pic of Mike polishing out some of the hood, a great day overall :mounty:
I guess this whole tuition detail thing is gaining some recognition. Does he now have a better respect for what you do? Car looked good!
Yep, hopefully he does. I was trying to make him understand that's it's hard, but as long as you work for it and understand it, it will work out fine. He said a couple times about how it was harder than he thought. Hopefully he learned a lot, he's a new member here so I'm sure he'll chime in once he sees this.
Great work Bobby ... I see that it has some mods (rims and the gold brembo brakes). Hopefully by next summer I'll have a PC or a Makita and we can do something like this at your spot.
Yea ha, the car was real nice, it was dropped too, about 1 fingers worth of room, and he had a bunch more mods waiting to be put on. (Quad projectors painted black, HKS Exhaust) Yea man, if you get a Makita or PC I'll definitely show you some pointers. Word of advice though, don't use your car as a test car, find another one, your paint is so soft that it holograms almost by looking at it :yikes:
We can try my bro's sentra ... that paint is in really bad shape and he really doesn't care how it looks like ... lol
very cool post. glad to see you taught him some stuff! let me know if another one of these detailing meets goes down. id love to come out, and im not too far from bethlehem at all.
Yea ha, I didn't hold it, a guy from another forum (Autopia) held it. The main reason I went is to learn how to wetsand, and that's about all he covered lol. It would be sick to have a meet sometime, all we need is a location, so many guys try but we can never find a location. Phil's is a pretty good place, so we'll see, hopefully next summer we can get one organized. Domman, meet a friend on the forum. There's plenty of people, probably some who are pretty close to you, that would be happy to help out. I've met maybe 5 people from DB so far, and they've all been awesome people who love detailing.
I can't thank you enough for all of the help and advice, Bobby. Car looks so much better than after the hack job the last guy did. I had a great time and learned a ton of info and technique. I definitely have a great passion for detailing and cars and have always respected the time and effort that goes into making a car look perfect, but now I have an even greater respect for the hard work and time involved. Too bad you're going back to school or else I would be down to come back out and keep working on her. I wanted to finish her up this weekend, but I am supposed to work on my friend's SRT8 Jeep on Friday and my other friend's Supra on Saturday for a rally on Sunday so time is limited. I'll eventually get her all buttoned up and snap some pics. Thanks again -Mike
No problem bro, it would be cool to team up on a car next summer though, you'll probably have some techniques you could teach me haha. Just make sure you're wiping down you're work with IPA to check, and you'll be fine, even do it on your finishing step, because while it's unlikely to leave holograms, you have to make sure the finishing step is enough to take out the ones that were already there, which is something I learned on the Jeep Grand Cherokee I did, my finishing step wasn't taking out all of the holograms, so I had to kick it up a little. Anyway, it was great meeting you bro, make sure to snap some pics of that road rally, some of those cars you were telling me about sounded sick and I wanna see some pics :mounty:
