this gas prices are killing even though my accord averages 26.5mpg and 31mpg highway being highest i have seen it do. plus space is another issue.

    thinking of getting
    1. 06+ civic sedan (preferably manual)
    2. Honda Fit (but looks like its underpowered so might not do too good with gas but has a lot of cargo room
    3. just thought about mazda3 hatch version but being honda guy i dont know if i want to switch, i know how to fix honda so thats one of reasons i want honda
    4. thought about honda civic hybryd but people advising against it couse of cost of replacing IMA battery and stuff. even though they do about 45-50mpg

have to find out insuraince difference between accord and civic to see if its worth the savings

any input from ppl who have civic or Fit?

just saying, think outside the box lot cars. there are tons of things you can get that will give you that kind of mpg, and still be a hoot to drive.

What do you mean by the comment of space is an issue?

What would you benefit from buying a new car? Is this one paid off??

Car payments suck, and after these two I have are paid off I will not have another one!!

The Fit is actually quite nice for what it is. It is a cheap econobox so the interior materials aren't the greatest (carpet especially) and there will be more wind and road noise than you are used to in an Accord. On the upside most people with MTs seem to be doing significantly better than the EPA highway rating, more like 36 - 39 mpg without hypermiling, the handling is more responsive than most Accords and the interior space is great. Some people hate the seats, it seems more likely to have position/comfort issues if you are 6'+. Compared to a '97 Civic DX MT that my wife once owned it actually feels mildly sporty, less so compared to a Civic Si. Post the rising gas prices this year and the Japan disaster dealers are less willing to deal on new Fits and prices are up for used ones. MTs have been in short supply all along. Honda USA has been mostly importing the Sport version with ATs. The Fits have the usual thin, soft Honda paint. That sloping nose and the big expanse of glass makes them a magnet for paint and glass chips. If you get a Fit you might want to look into a clear bra.
A Mazda3 will only get slightly better gas mileage than your Accord but they are supposed to get a new, more efficient engine next year.

i have coupe accord. even though right now i dont need space that much even though my detailing supplyes fit in car almost fine its not very comfortable to get into back seat to put stuff there and take stuff out.
benefit would be gas milage and more space. in 3 years that i had the car i put on 65k miles on it. car was paid off when i drove it out of dealership(had trade in so it helped)

bmw parts arent cheap, civic can get more then that, fit can get that milage and has about same space im guessing. not really into german cars even though i thought about jetta TDI but after doing math i figured that with diesel prices it not gona be much cheaper to drive

thanks for response. im leaning more toward civic, it looks pretty good and with oem lip kit it will look even better, plus my TL-S wheels will fit on it, good thing i didnt sell stock wheels yet.

fit is little underpowered i think. if they put 1.8 in there im sure it would get better milage. from what i heard from my accord guys, who had built motors they get a lot better milage then stock motors couse of more torque and less engine has to work to move the car(having built 3.7L compared to stock 3.0L, they are getting upwards of 40mpg if not beating on the car, im getting only 31mpg)

I get 8mpg in my truck and have to use 93. Sucks, but I need it to haul toys. Gotta pay to play I guess.

well, gotta pay to play is not what im doing. so its different for me. its gotta pay to drive from point a to point b more or less

I say go with your instinct

    TDI

30/41 MPG, no batteries, and much more environmentally friendly than a hybrid. Also VW looks cool and I think their interiors are better than any other car in their class.

In rural areas diesel prices are the same as regular.

Though of all the options you are considering I am a big fan of the civic.

I have to agree that the VW Jetta is a nice looking car.

30/41 thats pathetic. civic does that with regular gas. and gas in my area is about 30-50 center cheaper then diesel.
when i did math i figured that to keep same cost per mile diesel needs to do at least 5mpg more then gasoline car

reason i looked into jetta couse i had detailing client when i worked and he picked up jetta tdi from farmer(boy that car was filthy), he said he was getting 53mpgd. i think ill stick wtih civic, i like how lip kit looks on those and they are reliable cars even though diesel engines last forever as well

I would not call 30/41 pathetic. That is the manufacturer stated mpg; two of my friends that have it claim higher actual mpg. Though I can't argue with you that the Civic is the most economical from all aspects, I just think the new Jetta is a sweet car. I would view it as trading off some economy for a little driving pleasure (not that the civic isn't a total blast, because it is, I just like the interior of a Jetta). As August Horch said "Any car that merely takes you from A to B does not go far enough".

Here is an interesting article that compares the old jetta to the prius

2012 Civic does have some impressive stats, but to get the 28/39 you need to get the automatic.

Hands down Civic. 06+ are very affordable, get you from point A to B, dirt cheap to run (low cost parts, and its never going to break down), and still good on gas. Is it financially smart to sell a fully working car that gets decent fuel economy and spend more to get some fuel saving? Unless your pretty much buying for the price your selling then I would probably advise against it.

Seeing as you have calculated difference, savings, etc. It seems you know what to do not to spend more money for minor gas savings. Civic all the way!

I get 8MPG and it costs me 160.00 to fill my suburban, so anything better then that is awesome

Get a civic, if you like getting from A to B the fun way, you can get some rear disc brakes and suspension from the SI model.

26.5 MPG? That's pretty effing good! My Infiniti gets me 21MPG on average, while X5 gets 12MPG (mostly in the city), and if I floor it - 6MPG!
Well, I guess you are still making a smart move towards better fuel economy, but is depreciation of a vehicle really worth it? Or do you just want a newer car?
