Thinking about ditching my machines

So, I'm thinking about selling my dewalt rotary and my pc7424 and possibly getting a griots DA.

I only correct my three cars and two of those had to be done with the PC due to sticky paint issues. So I figure that a rotary is over kill for the times when ill just hit it with a light polish. I was thinking about the griots mainly because of the power it has over the other ROs to help make polishing a little less tedious on the vette (minus the flex which i dont want to spend that much for and coupled with the fact that i need the ability to use the smaller pads on two of the cars i have)

What do you guys think? Smart idea or just stick with what i have knowing that im just a hobbyist and not a detailer for money

I thought that the Griot's DA doesn't accept small pads.

For a single machine, I would go for the Meguiar's G110. It can take 4" backing plate and 4" pads, and it's supposed to be pretty powerful, with a circuit to maintain speed under pressure just like the Flex DA.

the new griots DA can accept the same backing plates as the meguiars and the new pcxp. the 2nd gen polishers all have that ability to rotate under pressure, i just figure the extra power and lifetime warranty are what make it appealing to me

Why not just stick with the 7424 you already have? If its just your own vehicles that you are doing, the likelihood that you'll need to do some major correcting is probably low since you are probably extremely careful when washing, etc.

Having said that, if you wanted to switch, it looks like the Griots is a powerful machine, although I was too under the impression that it didn't take the smaller pads.

Some info I saw in a post not too long ago:

    Porter Cable 7424
    3.7-4 AMP
    xxx watt
    5.75 lbs
1 year warranty (2yr for HD)

    Porter Cable 7424XP
    4.5 AMP
    500 Watt Motor
    5 pounds
3 Year Limited Warranty - 1 Year Free Service - 90 Days Money Back

    Griot's Garage Random Orbital Polisher
    7.0 AMP
    850 Watt Motor
    5.5 pounds
    Griot's Lifetime Warranty

    Meguiar's G110v2
    4.2 AMP
    430 Watt Motor
    5 pounds
    1 Year Limited Warranty

  5. Griots is the sure winner clearly. And then throw in a lifetime warranty. Nuff said IMPO :p:

I would get the model with the 25' cord.... 2 cents

So, how much you want for the pc. I call first dibs

Why don't you keep them both? You never know. the day that you need the right too and don't have it...

I like the idea of getting the Griot's, but hang onto the big guns just in case - best of both worlds :D

:D I just sold my pc 7424 locally for $100, but as far as the rotary thing I really have no use nor see myself needing it in the future, plus to be honest I'm reading how another professional detailer has gone pc full time using surbuf pads and megs 105 and that has me kind of thinking well he works on beat cars day in and day out, with my creampuffs im now more sure my rotary is overkill, plus I'm leaving for Europe in a few weeks and it'd be nice to have some extra money to spend up there (more RBOE perhaps?):applause2:

You can't beat a rotary for not only heavy correction, but for jeweling the paint. Example 3m Ultrafina use 1800 rpms.

Interesting, I didn't know that about the Griot's DA as there seems to be no info on swapping backing plates, and I figured that's why they also make the smaller 3" DA.

I gotta say, I have a 7424 and a 7424XP (as well as my Flex DA) and I don't see any significant improvement to the XP. If you're a professional detailer and you are constantly using machines, it's worth it to upgrade, but so far I've been surprised to see that the XP isn't noticeably better than the regular 7424...it's more like a refined version of the 7424 rather than a "newer, more powerful machine !!!"

I would say go with the G110 v2, it's supposed to rock ass.
