I don't know if this has already been shared here but I figure it can't hurt. The Strobist It's a great website that will teach you some great things about lighting with an off-camera flash. I know when most people think of a separate flash unit, they think more money, more expenses. But take a look at this site, there's a lot to learn and he uses some really affordable flashes that are possibly older than I am. Just thought i'd share! Hope you can learn a lot. There is a group on FlickR called the Strobist group or something like that and they share their photos using techniques found on that site. Get shooting!
I made a lightbox based upon the Strobist design. It worked pretty well. I used it with a flash and supplemental lighting from two work lights. Here's a a few examples from a shoot with it:
haha. thanks. I was pretty pleased with the results, though I was kicking myself for the finger print in the first shot. For about $10 in materials the strobist setup doesn't work too badly. I would have liked another light from above, and wished I had a circ. polarizer for my my macro at the time, but oh well.
lol. Thanks. This was one of my first attempts at macro. I thought the intricate detail work on the movement was a good subject. Getting the watch to sit just right so I could take a shot was a major pain.
