I would like to see how many economists are out there, giving your explanation as to why things are the way they are. Anyone read the Armchair Economist, The Tipping Point or other related material. We can start off with "Why does popcorn cost so much at the movies"? or why doesn't clay cost more than it does in the States? Maybe bring on some topics that might be good for ecomists conversation about the automotive field
Popcorn=because they can charge any amount. Clay= Because they can't charge any amount. This is my best quess.
Actually you are pretty close on the popcorn, but for the clay, if its a monopoly why doesn't it cost more than 25 dollars or so a bar?
Just a wild guess but... If it cost more there would be a larger profit to be made. Larger profit would interest companies that would fight the monopoly so they could make their own clay. Or not. lol
My guess, and someone could correct me, that's the point of this post, is that people would find a better alternative for a lower price. the price versus value comparision would be lost for clay. People would search for alternative rather that reinvent the wheel so to speak. These are only educated guesses and that's kind of how econlists work.
New Topic: Auto Industry Looks like I am affected by the sad state of business, might be detailing full time in the near future
the auto indutry, poor managment, a reputaion of poor quality and finaly a union that has taken them for every penny. something like 1500 from every car made goes t pay for retired empoyees. The unions have a choke hold on the co. both management and the workers need to make consesions if they all want jobs at the end of the day
i dont say it to be a jerk but if the unions dont cut back then they wont have a job.. the options are go with less or go with none I am not trying to be ajerk im just trying to look at this from a logical and objective point of view.managment should aslo change, if there is a bail out it should include new managment, do what nissan did and bring in someone new. right now its a taboo to suggest that the working class should go with less but the union and its workers are not without fault
I don't disagree, I am not union and will definitley not argue the fact that the corporate head haunchos have totally screwed up the state of the auto business, for many years, look at the job bank in the states, who ever agreed to that should be shot
sorry im confused bythat statement, what do you mean about the job bank? Also, keep in mind that there is alot more to this auto thing then poor managment, they make up a part but not the whole thing, simply replaceing them will not fix the problem, its far apst that. and yes i know you didnt mention replacing them but i felt it a logical jump from your statement
hey hey hey, lets not forget that a large share of the blame goes to our wonderful US government for forcing auto companies to comply with a bunch of stupid regulations. Safety, emissions, bumpers that have to be able to do this and that and blah blah blah. look at american cars. awesome in the 50's 60's and 70's... then in 73 the govt stepped in and started screwing around with everything and bam, look at US cars in teh 80's an 90's... total crap. I can speak from experience too, i owned a 91 Z28 and it was such a pile of garbage. US car companies are selling well overseas, but not here. government regulations are whats killing the auto industry, they force us to use gas that contains 10 percent ethanol that burns colder and isnt good for our engines, they make us use oil that has the heat package removed and is bad for our engines, without telling us or asking for our opinion by the way. Its crap, and we, the US citizens are getting the raw end of the deal.
