Well, we had an 07 Dodge Magnum in the shop this past weekend. It had tar all over it. We tried paint thinner, denatured, clay bar and had limited results. After some research and an MSDS search I realized that Xylene is a universal solvent. Mineral Spirits are pretty safe on most auto paints (within reason). So, off to Lowe's I went. I bought a gallon of Xylol (trade name of Xylene) and a gallon of low odor Mineral Spirits. We mixed is 1to1 in a small squeeze bottle. Unbelievable results (I know, this is worthless without pics). The tar dissolved very quickly with very little, to no aggitation. Anyone else ever tried this combo?
I haven't heard about this combo, but did you experience any hazing after wiping the solution? (3M adhesive remover hazes plastics really bad) Where did you hear about this?
Basically you created a product called Tardis. I'm not sure exactly if it is 50/50 mix or not, but must be close.
@Supercharged...that's where I got most of the information from. I looked at a number of products and their MSDS and these 2 solvents were the most commonly used. Tardis is very expensive to buy and ship. I now have 2 gallons of it for right at $30. @GDal...we taped off the plastics and trim. We didn't have any issues, but I will keep updating as we use it more often.
Xylene is great for tar and glue removal - But wear a chemical mask when using it. It's not exactly healthy stuff.
So you basically gave away the Tradis trade secret:applause: I hope this works because then I will never have to buy a tar remover again!
