After polishing and you pull off the tape... what do you do about the paint that the tape covered and hasnt been polished yet?? thanks
The only reason to have an area not corrected where the tape is would be when your doing a 50/50 shot, down the middle of the hood for example. If I had a split section of a panel with tape down the middle for a 50/50 I will correct one side fully, peel off the tape and take the 50/50 shot, and then continue to correct the other side of the panel with no tape. For masking trim and headlights etc just be sure to be very precise when you lay down your tape as to get as little paint as possible covered by tape.
The tape should primarily be used to protect trim. However, if used to protect high risk areas (i.e., uneven panel gaps, sharp contours, etc.), you will need to tape, remove, and re-tape areas to safely access tricky areas. For instance, when utilizing tape on an uneven panel gap, simply tape the edge of the adjacent panel you are not polishing. After polishing, remove the tape from the untouched panel and tape the edge of the polished panel to safely proceed polishing the unpolished panel. Hope this helps.
Yeah, what he said!!! It can be a little time consuming to do it this way and I would only really recommend it for doing serious correcting with a rotary. On the 350z MadOzodi and I just did, we taped the gaps between panels for the heavier cut polish with the rotary, but left them untaped for the the finishing with Menz Power Finish + white pad + Flex 3401. That way, it cleaned up that little 1/4" to 1/2" strip as well.
when doing a hood, most of the 3/4 inch tape is on the front guard and I buff over the tape then when moving to the front guard, I put most of the tape onto the bonnet this means no need for hand polishing the taped section.
Taping a vehicle has it's advantages but one thing I learned about taping a vehicle is that you have to pay close attention to details, meaning try to cover only the trim or what ever it is your trying to cover up and avoid overing too much paint. Some times you have to cover up a bit of paint but for the most part it's very minimal. Hope this helps.
thanks everyone! so from my understanding cover only what i dont want polished and what paint is taped off try to not cover to much of it. for the hood or other larger panels (such as roof doors, etc.) is it best to tape off section? Dream machines i did not understand what you ment by front guard and bonnet? lol i am new to this and my vocabulary is not quite up to par : ) but thank you for all the generous advice
