****UPDATE and probable cause (see post #5)*****

I posted something similar to this to the "Polishing" sub-forum, but don't think I explained my problem properly so I'm going to give it a shot here.

Grab a scotch (or drink of choice) and read on if you're in no hurry, novel to follow.....

    HISTORY:
I recently touched up my hood with a 3 stage polish followed by a glaze (DWG), sealant (Jetseal 109) and wax (Pete's 53).

About a week later I tackled a couple of hood chip repairs the previous owner had done a half-arse job on by doing the following:

    1) I taped off about a 12" x 12" area on the surface of the hood.
    2) Hit said area with a 50/50 IPA/distilled water solution.
    3) Applied my fix (Dr. Colorchip) to the hood chip.

    PROBLEM:
The chip repair is fine and I don't have any issue with that, but when I pulled off the tape (3M Scotch-Blue Painter's Tape for Delicate Surfaces ) there was an obvious outline almost etched into the surface across about 30% of the area under the tape I had just removed.

    ATTEMPTED FIXES:
I did the following on the affected area over the last week:

    1) ONR wash, no dice
    2) Megs Gold Class wash, no dice
    3) 4 different QD's, no dice
    4) Vinegar/water, no dice
    5) IPA/water, no dice
    6) Clay, no dice

so I went for the polishing

    7) M105 on LC Orange and still no dice

I hit the area with 3 different applications of M105 on a 4" pad via a PC 7424 and still nothing (slight improvement, but still very obvious).

    SUMMARY:
The thing is, I feel no surface difference over the affected area, it doesn't feel as if there is any residue on the suface, especially after all of my attempts to fix it. When I posted this to the "polish" sub-forum adhesive removal solutions were suggested but since its still there after polishing I am scared to hit my paint with something that strong. I am just not getting the basic chemistry?

Anyone have any advice on this? How could IPA and 3M tape cause such a PITA? I'm switching to 3M green tape for the future but does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, anything? I am leery of hitting the area with too much M105 since it is right in the same spot I had a few deep scratchs so said area is about 5 or 6 M105 applications into it.

Sorry for the novel, but the hood looks great except for the outline of the tape and it's driving me crazy.

Again, sorry for the novel, but I am at a total loss.

    Thanks

PS-I would post some pix, but I took about 20 tonight and can't seem to capture it. Yep, I'm a noob.

Were you out in the sun?

I would go with the 3M green auto body tape like you said you were going to. I have used the green tape in the hot sun and have not had any issues of an outline or anything.

I was in my indoor parking garage and the engine was cool. The thing is, I have used that same tape before without any issue, so I am thinking is has something to do with the IPA contact.

Short of wetsanding the area, looks like you've about covered all the bases, except maybe hittin it with a Rotary...:buffing:

All I use is the 3m blue, and I have never heard of what you have described. :shakehead:

Was the IPA still wet when you applied tape? :bat:

I layed the tape down before I hit the section with IPA.

I've done some more research and here's what Kevin Brown had to say and it looks like this is exactly what happened:
Moral of the story....Never tape freshly sealed or waxed paint and than throw some tape on it and hit it with IPA.

Hope this saves someone from making the same mistake I did. Time will tell what will happen with it. Fortuantely the only person who notices it is me, but it still drives me crazy.
