I've been playing around with my new rotary and I have to say that it is so much more satisfying than a PC. Thanks to all of you for putting up some great information for me to learn from. I have a question on applying my LSP though. I applied Blackfire sealant to a test area on my hood and drove to work this morning. When I looked at on when walking in, I could see that the area that I sealed attracted much more dust than the untreated hood. Will wiping down with a quick detailer or ONR after sealing make this effect less??
I find that if you dry your MF towels all the way that will put static in the towels and transfer it to the paint. Try not to dry them all the way or hang them to dry. The FK-425 works very well for me but there are conflicting reports...But This is just me...:thumb:
I actually thought about that. I guess it makes sense. The less static charge the MF has, the less transfer to the paint. I'll give that a shot.
In addition to just the static transfer form a charged towel, just the simple act of buffing creates a static charge on the paint. You should follow with a QD about an hour after applying your LSP to reduce the static charge. FK 425 is a great product for this purpose.
If you LSP and then QD, do you lose some of the visual characteristics of the LSP you used? I realize that 95%+ of the overall look is in all of the prep, but it seems some LSP's look better than others. If you use them, but just top them up with a QD anyway - logically, it seems like you'd just see how good the QD looks. :shead:
I don't normally see a loss of LSP characteristics, though that's what I'd assume too. What I do see is maybe a little added gloss.
One trick I have been doing for years, I have a long cable with a large alligator clip on each end. I clip the car (usually the tailpipe) and the other end goes to a lag that holds down my air compressor. Since using this cable I have not statically charger during a detail. If you do not have any grounds you can access just pound a piece of rebar into the lawn and clip to it, may need a longer cable though.
I do it as soon as I am done washing. It stays on the entire detail, compounding, polishing and LSP. Basically and action that would cause static. I even use it for QD's.
I already get weird looks from the neighbors. They always look at me funny when I'm ONR'ing my car in the middle of winter. Now I'm going to put my car on a leash in the front yard while I wax her. I can just imagine the rumors...
I could see this working while in detail, and it should probably work, but after that it can't help the car repel dust etc. when driving and all that. A car gets a static charge while in motion.
Just get a REAL long cord. LOL Once the customer picks the car up if static builds that is not my problem. What sucks is a customer picking up a freshly detailed car that looks like it is growing fuzz on it while it still sits in the shop.
