IIRC the Flex is designed to take no larger than 6" or 6.5" pads. If you are just starting out with the rotary I would get some smaller pads for sure.

I have some 8inch pads and to be honest I don't like them, they are harder to control and I just have a hard time when it comes to tight areas. So my 8inch pads are now sitting collecting dust. I now stick to the largest 6.5 and smallest 4inches.

One tip that might help that I noticed helped me is tilt the pads a bit, just a little though...that seemed to help me a bit  but it's been a wile since I used my 8inch pads.

I primarily use 5.5 " pads for my polishing, switching to 4" for tight areas. I have 6.5" pads and use them on large areas like hoods etc, but prefer the control I have with the 5.5" ones. I would suggest starting with the 5.5s until you are comfortable and then move up to 6.5s.
