Some rotary practice

  1. Hey guys, so I've been wanting some practice with the rotary and M105. I was fortunate enough to come across an old door from a 78 Cadillac limo. I want to say the car has been resprayed, but it is single stage paint. It was in horrible condition when I got it, but I'll stop rambling and let the pictures show.

These first 6 pictures show the condition of the paint:

This is after a few passes with wool and M105 on the rotary:

Sorry I didn't post any pictures of the middle step. I hit it with M205 and a white pad. These last pictures are after I finished with 3M UF and a blue pad.

I think the results came out pretty good. I would have loved to wetsand a little bit, but I apparently didn't have any. Feel free to leave any comments or tips.

good start, I remember my first car ever was an 2000 Jag, it would have been nice to start on something like this.

  3. Thank you. I've used the rotary before on a few different cars but I didn't like the results and didn't feel comfortable with it. I wanted something that I could use to really get a feel for the machine and polish without fear of ruining the paint. The next section I'm going to wetsand a little bit.

Great idea Josh. Nice looking results. Now scratch it up with a green 3M scrubbie and have at it again!

  5. Oh I plan on it!! I need to pick up some wetsand paper as well today to really amp up the results!

Josh..it looks great. Do you have a PTG? If so, see how much cc you're removing b/c you're ultimate goal is the most amount of correction with the least amount of removal. I realize that you're dealing with a ss paint job here.

looking pretty good. I practiced with my rotary on my daily driver. It actually turned out pretty good...

  10. I don't have a paint guage so I wouldn't have the first clue as to how much I removed unfortunately.

    Thanks a lot Denzil!

    Thanks!

I picked up some sand paper today and plan on working on the other section of the door tomorrow sometime to see what I can do.

  14. So I did some wetsanding today and it seems like this car was definitely a re-spray. The reason I say that is because after I wetsanded and polished, the paint looked "patchy," almost like I took off the newest layer of paint and the under layer was starting to show through. The other reason is that is had orange peel like crazy. Overall though, I feel like I feel much more comfortable with the rotary and most importantly the wool/M105 combo.

On the other hand, my own car does not need a wool step so I won't be able to practice on a clear coated car just yet.
