I came across what appears to be a good, reputable detailer in my area. He also appears to be Opti-Coat certified. He's on another forum and his write-ups are great and seems just as legit as you guys, but I had an odd experience with him recently. He came out to my house to give me an estimate on opti-coating my car. While inspecting the car we noticed a few spots of sap (or something like that). He then went to his truck and took out what I assume was opti-clean or something like it, sprayed the spots in question, then used a dirty (it might have been clean but was certainly stained) microfiber of debatable quality (looked like a target or zwipes), and wiped/picked off the sap. The car was relatively clean otherwise, but I still would have take more care. I'm probably answering my own question, but based on the fact that he handled my car in a fashion that even I wouldn't do, should I stay far away? Or perhaps because he figured he was going to be detailing/correctly it shortly (though by no means did we ever agree on anything yet) he didn't think twice about possibly marring it? Or am I simply over-thinking it? Again, he's on another forum with a lot of good posts and write-ups, and seems just as legit as you guys as far as I can tell... Thanks for any thoughts.

Trust your gut, first impressions are everything. You are/sound fairly educated about detailing, use your guy instinct. The fact he used a "unknown" product and used old towel to me speaks volumes about him, his business and his skill set.
I couldn't agree more ... if he treated the car like that in front of you, I can't imagine he will treat it better when you are away.
You know, I would certainly not make a change to someone's car without first asking them about it, if they wanted to talk further regarding its removal. But in my case, I would have never gotten to this stage, as I do not carry anything in my vehicle like that. Its all in my Cabinets at my Shop/garage, etc., where it supposed to be kept. And if I was going to do anything to anyone's vehicle it would always be with a clean towel chosen for that particular task. No dirty towels, out of a dirty box, etc... No, Homey dont play that - ever -. I want my prospective and current Clients to know that I am treating their "baby" like it is mine and it is the most important one in my Shop. Exactly....... I would never break out any products on a car without any sort of agreement. You are just asking for trouble. Not to discredit this detailer, he may be good, he may suck. But for sure his business side of things is not cool.
Who is this? Might be helpful for people to guid you if we knew who he was and could vouch for his work. That intial step wasn't very professional though.
Please refrain from posting his information here. As much as we all want to know who the person is, I'm not going to allow this to be a bashing session for someone we don't know. We do know he's not doing what he's supposed to be doing and that's pretty much it. What we can all deduct from your comments is that he's not the person you want to detail your vehicle.
Not sure why everyone is against posting someones stuff up. It doesn't even have to be their business name. The people out their who occasionally come to these sites to seek a professional detailer for their own vehicles won't know who this person is and can easily get themselves into a sticky situation which could all really be avoided by letting everyone know who he is. It doesn't have to turn into a bashing session or anything like that. I'm sure there that there is a professional way to go about letting people know.
