Hi im not sure if this is the write section for my question, as i read through the description and this seems like a start...........i actually have a keyed scratch on the car and i can feel it with my finger nail but its not that deep, so i was wondering what do you guys recommend using to "repair"? Thanks
If you can feel it with your finger nail, it will probably require some paint. Can you post some pics?? Welcome to DB!!!! Heath
You might get some smoothing of the edges, but probably not much more. What kind of car do you drive?? Is the paint single stage or two stage (base coat/clear coat).
The car is white right?? You can probably make it look pretty good being white. Maybe so it wont stick out so much. You could try wet sanding it.
yup pearl white........im afraid to wet sand it......thinking i may screw up and make it look even worse
Found this post from togwt Deep Scratches A surface scratch that will `catch' your fingernail is approximately 0.04 Mil (1.0 µ) deep will usually require wet sanding and the clear coat refinishing Removing a scratch requires removing the layer of paint that contains the defect; you need to level the paint to the lowest point of the scratch. Removing more that 0.5 mil (12µ) of clear coat will cause premature paint film failure as UV protection percolates to the top of the clear coat. Check paint film thickness with a Paint Thickness Meter (PTG) before you attempt to remove As you go over a deep scratch, the abrasives round off the edges of the high spots of the scratch. The result is a shallower scratch (when no full correction can be made) rounded edges don’t reflect light the same way a sharp edge will and is therefore less noticeable.
thanks, have you also heard of quixx repair kit QUIXX Repair System - Der Entfernt Kratzer fr alle Lacke
Havent heard of that kit. I have seen quixx before. Some other guys maybe able to comment on it. There is a kit you could look up called Langka
LANGKA Paint Chip and Scratch Repair - The paint chip repair products made by LANGKA have been used in the auto repair industry for the last 15 years,
I would try diminishing its appearance firstly with a product like Scratch X and then move on to some machine polishing if you want to further diminish the scratch. Thats about the best you can do when the defect is that deep.
Would filling in so slightly with touch up paint, let it cure, fill the balance in with clear, and then wetsand ?
Yes, but it is almost impossible to get an exact color match with metalics or pearlescent paints. That said, white is very forgiving in that regard so if you are able and willing to wetsand, you can achieve great results that way.
Where are you located? We may be able to recommend you a local pro:thumb: In honesty its the smartest move to make from here.
im from canada and know a good shop, but i want to learn how to repair something like this.........so buffers are not for beginners right?
