My question is what makes that unit so good? It has less power then the griots da and will probably be double the price.

Corrects faster than the griots because it has a larger stroke. It's similar to using a dynabrade head on a rotary; only the rupes was built for that purpose, not adapted for it. At least that's my understanding; correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, the Rupes tops out at over 4000 rpm; so it's not exactly a slouch.

Contact Kevin Brown about dates and pricing.

In that case, I hope it corrects nearly 3 times as fast, based on it being almost 3 times as expensive...... Also, I hope it is significantly lighter as well. Correcting faster isn't exactly an advantage if it's heavier..... We as detailers still has to hold on to the machine for hours on end.

sounds interesting now that you put it that way dfazekas.

If you do the currency conversion just for a very rough idea on cost it comes out to $695.70 give or take depending on the currency exchange rate at the time of purchase + shipping.

Now my other question regarding power would be this: Is it better to have the machine top out at a higher OPM and have lesss power or would it be better to top out at a lower OPM with more Power?

    Griots Garage DA:
    More Powerful 7-Amp, 850-Watt Motor
    2,500 - 6,800 Orbits Per Minute
Orbit Diameter: 5/16" aka about 8mm

    or

Rupes LHR 21ES Random Orbital Polisher
1,700- 4,200 RPM's (Not OPM's) according to the manufactures website
Weight: Says 2,600 Kg's which is false as nobody can hold a 5,000 buffer so i'm guessing it's 2.6Kg's which is roughly 5.5 lbs
    Orbit Diameter: 21mm

I'm interested to know more about the Rupe products myself.

Me too actually, it's been all the raves among top detailers all over the world. I just hope people here can justify the performance vs cost issue..... one rupes da = a griot's 6", griot's 3", plus a makita rotary, and an assortment of pads......

I think I will pass on this one. I have way to many machines now. Plus if the cost in that ball park it would be prohibitive.

The stroke is way more on the Rupe. If you watch the video's you can clearly see it. I don't get to really detail exotics and don't get to charge heavy dollars so it's pretty far out of my price range for now.

Looks nice, but considering I already have 4 polishers, I won't be buying unless I win big at the casino... And if I win the lottery, I'll buy everyone on here one of those :p

Looks like a pass for now, unless they update the motor. The only thing that bothers me about this test is that the tester did not use the same pads/compounds, which I think is pretty stupid. But it seems that the Flex is the clear winner. Sucks since I was really looking forward to the no vibration feature, plus the carbon fiber just looks cool:

I agree with most of what you say. I have never tried the flex but have checked it out before. Griots seems to be the unit of choice by many with great results.

Let's not get bent out of shape about yet another "amazing polisher that will also cook your breakfast in the morning". I've read some reviews online and from the feedback that I've seen so far, it's not exactly the best quality polisher and is not any better than the much cheaper Flex forced DA.

Why can't Porter Cable just build us an 800 watt version and be done with it.

Are any of you using a dynabrade set up?

ok at that price i will skip it....i have broke a griots and a pc 7424 this year with heavy heavy 4-6 day a week use....i have tried to use the flex 3401 and i love the power i dont like the way it handles and i hate how my go to compound (m105) gums up on high humidity days with it. i just picked up anew griots and looks like i will get a flex 3401/and 14-2 combo

Great that Griot's machine has the Lifetime Warranty but sucks that they seem to break quite often.. its like you always have to have 2 of them and 1 is the back up while the other is on the way back for exchange.

I also have the Flex3401VRG for several years, since they first came out, and while I like it for some things, I still have the fastest results using either my Makita 9227C or Flex PE14-250 Rotaries..

Have you had the chance to try Meguiars 101 compound ? I have used M105 way more than M101 but when I need something strong, M101 is way more user-friendly than 105 every will be, and I have a good work technique with 105 already.

I know a guy that probably still has M101 from an order he made overseas awhile back; let me know if you want his info..

"Now my other question regarding power would be this: Is it better to have the machine top out at a higher OPM and have lesss power or would it be better to top out at a lower OPM with more Power?"

I would always want a more powerful motor, especially if you are going to put a strain on it as in pressing down with more than machine weight, as I do all my machines when correcting. I am thinking that a less powerful motor is not going to be able to take as much force for as long a time as a more powerful motor.

Now, all of this above I am referring to is in a "production" setting, like where you Detail almost all week, perhaps part of the weekend, put lots of hours on the machine at a time, and dont give it much rest until 10-12 hours have gone by.

The OPM part I dont worry about because I use strictly Rotary Power for all my paint correction work, period.

For the weekend warrior, I think most any machine will last a long time unless you totally abuse it.

Could this Rupes be the ultimate microfiber pad tool? Rupes shows and states that this tool is to be handled without aggressive pressure, so it's no match for a rotary or forced rotation. My quandary is the price...if Flex made the same tool, what would Flex charge for it? Surely, not what Rupes is charging.
