So I think it is time to step up to a rotary. I am looking at the Makita 9227C. What pads and backing plate do you recommend for the rotary? Currently now I use LC CCS 5.5" and will be getting 4" pads for my PC 7424.

I like the 5.5 inch pads with the 3m backing plate. At first I didn't think the 3m plate would be worth the $$$ but it really is, makes polishing smooth like butta.

For pads megs are nice and I recently tried some of the 3m pads from ebay and they are pretty nice as well. The LC pads are fine to if you are comfortable with them just keep using them.

I don't like going over 6.5" flat/CCS pads personally, I believe I've got some of the curved edge CCS pads as well which are somewhat bigger but have about the same area in contact with the paint.

I've got a couple different backing plates but this is what I use primarily:
5 - 6" Hook & Loop Rotary Flexible Backing Plate

I'd like to give that 3m bp a try but I've got a nasty noise coming from one of the rollers in the timing belt circuit on my Jetta so I've got to budget for that whole ordeal.

I use the pads listed with my PC I thought the 5.5 would be to small. I was looking at Meguiars because I can get them locally.

All I use is the 3M Backing Plate, just can't see my self using any other backing plate, I even use the smaller version of it lol any who I have several backing plates. From 2.5 to 8inches, you just can't have enough backing plates they all come in handy.

As for pads, so many pads but the Meg's pads are really good and well worth it. I gave up on the Lake Country pads with my rotary, they just didn't perform well for me

Sonus pads are quite nice, I'd recommend them :thumb:

I also use the 3M UK pads and I'm very pleased with them.

    Well just my :2cents:

I finally got rid of my Propels to Heath, hehe. Now I only work with the UK 3M pads, the Detailerguy/eBay pads, and the 4" Erasure (Excel Detail) pads.

I still need to get a hold of a smaller backing plate for my Metabo. Speaking of which, did you get any word as to whether the smaller UK 3M backing plates have been made without the use of the M14 adapter Carlos?

Yes, the smaller UK 3M backing plates are done, but not sure when I'll be able to get my hands on them just yet. Hopefully soon, now I need to play the waiting game

Yea, I'm not fond of the waiting game but good things are worth waiting for...besides they were custom made so I hard to order a really, really large amount lol. Well I do like having extras :crasy:

Whats is it about the 3m backing plates that make them better? Same for the UK pads? What is different then the US pads?

Just a quick bump, because I too am curious.

IME, the 3M backing plates just are more padded than say the W64 backing plate and a few other backing plates out there. It tends to give in more when pressure is applied, compared to its competitors, and it seems to handle body lines and contours a little better.

Well this is just my opinion, but to me the 3M UK backing plate offers better control, extra cushion, and like Denzil said it spreads evenly the pressure you apply to the rotary. It's extremely flexible and this comes in handy around edges, specially when polishing vehicles that have lots of curves. As for the 3M UK pads, again just my opinion, they seem to hold up much better, they are smaller in diameter (just personal preference that's all) 6inches opposed to 8inches and best of all they perform quite well....but then again Lake Country performs, Menzerna pads perform, 3M US performs...to be honest it's a personal taste, you don't 'have' to have the 3M UK products, it's not like you wont be able to detail with out it, it's just that they have a completely different feel to them both backing plate and pads...for me it's hard to explain but once you try it you'll realize what the hype is all about. Well that' s what happened to me at least

    Hope this helps.
