    Hey All,

First off thank you all for a great forum.

I did some searching but couldn't find anything so I appologize if this has been asked before.

What I'm trying to find out is, is it neccessary to strip wax if you intend to use a compound and polisher to do some paint correction? ie. wash with ONR, go to town with the polisher.

If it is necessary, is there a similar product to ONR that will strip? or is ONR and claying the area the best option? I REALLY like the being able to do a panel at a time in my garage with ONR. Any clay brand suggestions welcome as well (dealing with BMW 550 paint).

My dilemma is I'm new to detailing and still learning to use polishers, my vehicle is in need of quite a bit of work, and I can't find time to really work the whole car. So I end up washing/drying the whole car with dawn, working a small section, don't wanna leave it unprotected, apply polish/wax. Then I start all over again the next time haha.

I guess I could always just use dawn on the section I want to work, but inevitably dawn will end up on other panels and I'll have to re-polish/wax those. Really my favorite option would be ONR and clay, is that sufficient to prep for correction work?

    Thank you for your guidance,
    Shane

(I didn't find a newb forum or I would have posted there haha, I've also read about the dangers of dawn over time before its brought up, I've only used it a couple times)

Clay will remove the wax,so will polishing. If you want to go further with it you can use 50/50 alcohol/water wipe to remove the wax or prep all will work and you can use these on one panel at a time, instead of the whole car. I wouldn't use dawn anymore there's better options.

    +1 to SSTG.

For what it's worth, here's my process when I hit my DD one panel at a time on different days:

    ONR wash
Tape off targeted panel (Note-minimize tape on newly sealed/waxed panels, if you must place the tape on part of a newly sealed/waxed panel avoid getting the IPA under the tape at all costs, keep a special eye on IPA run off or dripping. If you work entire panels at a time you will be good to go with no worries, but just something to keep your eye on, don't ask how I know this, I just do ;).)
    Clay
    50/50 IPA solution
    Stage 1 polish
    50/50 IPA solution
    etc...
    Final Polish
    Final 50/50 IPA Solution application
    Glaze and/or sealant and/or wax

I use Dawn and Dawn Power Degreaser to clean my pads and nothing more.
