My Makita 9227 is driving my neighbors nuts and I'm getting a lot of complaints. Are there any rotary buffers out there that are much quieter?

Are you using it in or out of a garage? I never thought of the Makita as loud. My PC is louder. If it's in the garage there might be some sound deadening boards or something you can hang up.

I agree. Your Makita isn't very loud at all. If your neighbors are complaining about it, you're gonna have problems forever. Remember, no body, no crime.

I polish between 9 AM and 5 PM, normal business hours. The lady that's complaining works out of her house and says she can't stand the noise, so she's writing to the city and her landlord. :waiting2:

That sucks sooooo bad. All you could do is maybe apply for a business license.

Well, there's the problem!! Move down to Compton. I'm sure that the sound of your Makita will be the least of their worries. lol j/k

You should be fine with that time frame. She can't really do much about it.

apparently in orange county, ca, the noise level of a residential house can't exceed a certain decibal, no matter what the time. This was told to me by an officer that came to the house to tell us to keep it down. of course the officer didnt have a decibal meter at hand, but thats what was told to me.

Maybe applying for a business license would work?

I wouldn't think it would be louder than a lawnmower, and i am sure everyone uses one to have their grass cut. Just saying as a comparison.

There is nothing the city will do for her. The only possible thing they could do is nail you for running a service type business from your house, that is if it says you can't in the city ordinance.

    Makita at 1500 rpm : 76 dbA
Dewalt at 1500 rpm: 84 dbA

FWIW - the PC 7424 XP has a noise rating of 45dBA at speed 6

Do you have to use a rotary all of the time. If not the Cyclo is really quiet.

I found my metabo to be a bit quieter than my makita.

That being said, are you working in your garage? Perhaps insulating the garage doors would help a good bit.

I do agree with others that your neighbors are probably being over-sensitive to the noise.
