Ok so today was the first time ever I clayed a car :applause2:I started on my 05 M3 and I was using sonus green clay with a MG quck wax as lube. So the front of the car is clear bra so I didnt clay that should I ? Next the worst part of the car was the back on the bumper and trunk side (not top) It pulled off a bunch of stuff that was brown in color like rusty. Anyways wondering if this is normal. What I mean to say is..do most cars require more claying in the back or the front? Or dose it vary?
Everything sounds about right. I clay the clear bra as well, just be careful around the edge as little pieces of clay will get stuck in the bra. It does vary, some cars have contaminates in areas others don't. Like on our G35, the trunk always has a lot as the rear kicks up a lot of dirt and it's always dirty. Even after a spin around the block theres noticeable dirt on there. So it varies with different cars, but it sounds like you did it right. Get some pics up! -Brendan
The brown dbris the clay is remoing is brake dust / adhesive, the metallic brake dust tends to rust, hence the color. Detailer’s clay will remove most but not all of the iron particulate that is the cause of the rust "blooming", to for a corrosion decontamination system to be effective requires the complete removal of all particulates and the corrosive acids they generate that have penetrated the paint surface system. These abrasives are extremely small with an average particle size of 1- µ (micron) dependent on the aggressiveness required, mixed in with a powdered synthetic detergent. The abrasives 'shear' the surface contaminates, the sheared particles are then encapsulated by the clay (i.e. the top of the metallic particle leaving the rest embedded in the paint, which acts as a conduit for moisture to the various paint layers, allowing it to continue generating corrosion damage) While clay products are useful for overspray and cleaning surface contaminants, it cannot permeate and deep clean the pores of the paint. Sounds right. Most cars create a good amount of downforce because of their shape. My car for example can be completley clean and then I look at my rear bumper and trunk and its filthy. Also try to use a quick detailer or onr as clay lube instead of a spray wax.
My daily drive is an 05 M3 as well. The rear is a magnet for dust and contaminents so what you're seeing is normal, especially for our cars. You might want to look at picking up some ONR and using it at the recommended clay lube dilution, much more cost effective than Meg's QD as a lube. Nice choice of Sonus Green, I love the stuff and just reordered a couple more bars earlier today .
good job on claying the car...but sounds right with what everyone else said. there may also be more contaminants coming off since it is the first time the car has been clayed in 5 years.
yeah paint is in badd shape AZ for 4 years then NV for another makes for lots of swirls the paint needs a serious over haul I''l post up a nice write up when I actually work on the car. I just clayed it because I wanted to do a pre clay to see if i needed a more agressive clay. thnx guys for all the imput it helps alot. Tom thnx for the link on the write up I hope mine loooks just as good when done
Remove surface contaminants with a mild cut detailer’s clay (Sonus Mild Green clay) and a surface lubication, tape the edges
