I have been using the Porter Cable for about 2 months now. And I want to try a Makita 9227. I heard that it was a good rotary. I have a few questions regarding a rotary in general.

How is a rotary differ from a PC in performance wise? Let's say I use a purple wool pad with Power Gloss using a PC, how would that differ on a rotary. I have watched Nica's video on polishing and the movement he using looks similar to a PC. Will I need nee to apply less pressure? or keep it moving more because I heard since it is a rotary, it is not good to keep the rotary static on the clear and always have it moving along the panel.

As for the hook and loop backing plate with the 5/8" x 11 spindle threaded. Is it all 5/8" x 11? I want to get the 3m back plate, I heard a lot of good things about it. Which size backing plate would you recommend to start with? A 5 inch one? On detailers domain, Phil has a 3m back plate but I do know what the size is.

With that said. Is there anything I need to know before I buy a Makita 9227. Thanks! :headbang:

The rotary has a uniform circular motion while the PC has a "dual-action" or "random-orbital" motion. With the rotary, you'll achieve more correction power due to its consistent/uniform motion whereas the PC you'll achieve less.

There's actually a huge difference between both machines when using the same pad and polish combination. You may need to apply less pressure but it's more advisable that you start with lower RPMS (< 1200) to reduce the risk of damage. In essence, keep it moving!

The 3M backing plate that Phil offers is compatible with the Makita 9227C or any U.S.-sold rotary machine. It would be the perfect BP to start with and use for its entire lifetime and it measure just slightly under 5 inches in diameter.

Oh and remember, respect the machine and you'll achieve great results! If you don't have enough courage to practice on your own vehicle, go out to a junkyard and buy some scrap panels to work on. Good luck!

    Okay thanks Denzil :worship2:

I am going to buy one on ebay. I think it is $169.99 for a 9227 plus a bag too.
And 30% off using live cash back, that should come out to $127.49 after all said and done. :applause2:

Good advise, I live near a junkyard too, so I'll stop by and see what they have. I'll put your advise to good use.

    Thank you :mounty:

The rotary is a big difference. I went from using a UDM to the Makita and wow... the best part? No more vibration! The cutting power is much greater compaired to the PC. You will find that you will be able to use a less agressive pad/polish combo to remove defects that would require much more aggressive combos with the PC

The backing plate on detailers domain is a 5 inch I believe, but maybe others can chime in who know for sure.

The only thing I would say to expect befor buying is a great machine, However where the cord enters the machine fell apart quickly on mind and had to be replaced, and I have heard this happen to numerous people on the form.

Good Luck with your Makita, you wont regret it!

Thanks for all the tips. :thumb:

Sounds that this is a great machine. I think I will getting one of Phil's 3M backing plate too. I heard I should start off with LCC pads. What other pads do people use with with the makita/3m backing plate.

I use Sonus and LC Pads. Find a style of pad you like and learn it well.

Meguiars 6 inch pads are great, I just ordered some Sonus pads off e-shine so I will have to see how they preform. A lot of people on the forum use 3m pads but I cannot comment on them as I have not used them.

It takes time getting use to it but in the end it i the only way to go

Get an old used hood from junk yard and practice on it until you get good so you don't damage your paint on any real cars your detailing

    Hope this helps
