I know the 2009 G37 has the Sticky Clear Coat. However an old teacher of mine bought this G37 IIRC in 2007(December) And the G37 premiered as an 08 Correct? Or am I wrong? If it does have the sticky clearcoat, in addition to the threads on this forum what other precautions shall I take?
The G37 may or may not have the sticky clear coat. It's not the paint itself, it's that some of them were wrapped with whatever they are wrapped with for shipping before the paint was dry. Nica has worked on one before, and should have a thread about it, and I'm sure he'll be happy to chime in on this thread if he see's it since he has experience with it.
Well if I remember correctly the 08 G37's were available in 07...but I could be mistaken here so don't quote me on it. As for having the sticky clear coat, they sure do and it's no fun but what I found that worked well was a polish that has lots of lubrication, Menzerna Power Gloss does not have much lubrication so I wouldn't recommend using it, polish like Optimum has lots of lubrication. I used the 3M UK polish and that worked well for me, still gave me some problems but it got the job done. The one thing I also tried is, I gave the vehicle a wipe down with Menzerna Top Inspection and that seemed to help a bit....you know what else might work, I say might because I personally have not used it, is a DA to polish vehicles with sticky clear coat. Clark of Polished Bliss was telling me about his experiences with the annoying sticky clear coat and what has worked for him is the PC with just about any polish. Like I said though I don't even own a PC any more so I have not tried it my self.
G37 debuted in 2007 as an 08 model. It's possible that it will have a completely normal clear coat. It was only a small percentage of the cars that had the sticky clear.
Yeah I have heard that using a DA eliminates that problem. I think I would still rather use the rotary though because I could not image spending a whole day using a DA... my hands would go numb
You can use your Makita just lower the RPM, as to how do you know if you have the sticky clear coat...um..well when you see small balls of polish flying all over the place and the polish flashes over as soon as you start up your rotary you'll know its sticky..oh not only that your rotary will hop around and wont want to stay on the surface of the paint. Oh you know what I made a video of my experience with the sticky clear coat. Here it is: http://www.detailingbliss.com/forum/f92/famous-sticky-clear-coat-issue-4253.html
I've completely swapped over to the Gloss-It polishes now for polishing sticky paint as they seem virtually unaffected by it! 99% of the time you forget you're polishing sticky paint, whether it's with the Rotary or DA. Sometimes it is actually quicker to use the DA than rotary but I will agree with one of the statements above - you do get numb hands from the vibrations so it's not always that fun!
Wish me luck. I'm using my rotary on my own G35 this weekend. Hope I don't have the sticky clear coat although I have a pretty late build date. If i do, I'm placing an order for some gloss-it.
