Polishing tail lights

Well I had the chance to make the following video of how I polish the tail lights.

    Here is the process:

First I used a 3M UK Orange Compounding foam pad, Menzerna 85RD 3.02, Metabo at 1500 RPM combined with the 3M UK Backing Plate. This removed all the deep scratches that were on the tail lights.

Followed up with 3M UK Black Polishing foam pad, Menzerna 85RD, Makita at 1500 RPM combined with the 3M UK Backing Plate, this brought an incredible gloss to the lights.

Things to take note of is the speed I polished the lights at, because of the speed and the stiffness of the Orange Compounding foam pad the speed had to be increased. The other thing to note is when using stiff foam pads be careful with the edges of the foam pads, specially where the tail lights meet with the metal panel, if your not careful you could damage the edge of the metal panel, I didn't tape the edges up but it is an option. I used to do tape the metal panel edges but now I got the hang of it and don't need to tape the edges.

    Well hope you enjoy.

Thank you again Carlos for taking the time to make this available to those of us who need to see and copy what obviously works well.
Last week I tried a product called Plastix on the headlights but I can see the products you used works much better,Ill give it a shot.

    Nice video. :)

How would you compare the overall performance of the Makita vs. the Metabo? I know that the Metabo would be lighter, but other than that, how do they compare, which has the better feel, etc.? Thanks in advance.

Sweet, glad they are usefull sly. Thank you for the feed back, very much appreciated.

Nice, glad you found them usefull :thumb:

Glad you enjoyed the video as to comparing the Makita Vs Metabo? Well to be honest I like them both, I forced my self to use the Makita to detail 5 cars with and after the 5th vehicle I felt really confortable with the Makita however, I really favour the Metabo...not just becuase it's lighter, smaller build..ect..ect..just becuase the way it fits in my hands. This is just my experiance, but for me the Metabo melts in my hand...it literaly feels like an extension of my hands. Don't get me wrong the Makita is a great machine, I enjoy having both. But the Makita is a bit havier, a bit on the bulky side and where you notice the difference (even though your body and your technique will adjust to the Makita after doing 2 or 3 full paint corections) is on the horizontal panels, that's where I noticed the difference between the Metabo and the Makita. On flat panels like the hood, roof, trunk and even fenders the Makita works great but as soon as you go verticatal (door panels)...but like I for me it took 5 full paint corection process to really feel confortable with the Makita. After the 5th detail the Makita just as good as the Metabo, actually there are several things I like about the Makita...things such as, the speed dial, the triger (love the triger), the Makita has a slower start compared to the Metabo, the weight is not a bad thing either as it's great on flat panels you don't really need to apply too much presure on the panels as the weight of the machine sometimes is plenty, the lovely black handle...well I can go on and on..but I think you get the point.

I like both of them, that's why I have both :giggle: :giggle:

Oh on another note, I personaly would love to see other members posting videos of how they do things. The reason I say that is because to be honest I didn't think much of how I do things and I started posing the videos becuase I wanted you help those that are/were scared of a rotary, I honestly didn't think much of my technique, so if your in the same boat I was in before well look how these videos have helped others. That's why I say, I personaly would love to see others post videos as well, there is more then one way to skin a cat :peace:

Nice video, thanks. I feel as if I can use my rotary now with a good amount of confidence without trying it out first. I might go out and polish my hood tomorrow to get a feel for it. I'll keep it slow at first until I get used to it. I found the part where you switched pads pretty funny lol.

Hey Carlos can you clarify for me the two polishes used.

PO 85 rd this one is the micro polish
PO 85 rd 3.02 what is this one?

is there a difference between the two and/or do they have different names.

Boy talk about late reply, but glad you found the video useful, I've got others I need to load but just haven't had the time...but winter is coming and detailing slows down so I'll have time soon :thumb: Thank you for the feed back very much appreciated :peace:

Well you know for the longest time I too was confused between the two but I finally figured it out. Any who PO 85 rd is micro polish. PO 85 rd 3.02 is Menzerna Intensive Polish, Menzerna has odd numbering system so when I started using the Menzerna products I just stuck with the numbers and didn't call them by their name..but now I can use them by their name...unless Menzerna decides to change their labeling system which I hope not  Hope this helps, if I've confused you even more let me know and I'll do my best to explain it as beast as I can.

Not to nit-pick but PO 85RD 3.02 is Super Intensive Polish which is the ceramic polish of Intensive Polish, also called PO83

Ah yes, that is correct...I just ran to the garage to check, I use this stuff all the time you'd think I'd remember the name lol. Thank you for the correction :peace: The bottle I have still has the label 85RD 3.02 but that's an old bottle.
