Carn and I were just discussing this, this weekend. The fast cut he was using made a fair bit of dust and I was following him with the yellow 3M pad and FA. But we did start to worry when we were wiping the dust away. So, a quick experiment followed. Carn simply put some of the dust from the Fast Cut on to a micro fiber and wiped a spot we had just polished with the FA. We instantly saw some fine scratches appear.:yikes: Just wondered if this could have simply been a "fluke". This did however make Carn and I change our minds on how to work when using a compound. We felt the whole car should be compounded first and then rinsed. Only then should we start finessing. Just wondering what your guys thoughts are on this.
When I learned to compound at a bodyshop, we were told to complete one stage before moving onto the next. So when the boss says do something, you do it. I guess your demonstration says why. PS. I didn't really learn how to polish until this site!!
 yes, I've found that when your compounding and removing the dust that is left behind you have to be careful. Especially when your dealing with a black colour vehicle. Also what I normally do is if I'm compounding, I compound the entire vehicle. Flatten out all defects for the entire vehicle, once I'm satisfied with the compounding I either re-wash the vehicle or I use the Zymol duster to remove the dust. Then I continue with the next polishing stage. Just my :2cents:
I usualy foam the car with a alkalie degreaser and rinse it off with a power washer. Very effective and fast.
From past experiences I have found that after compounding a foam gun soak followed by a high pressure rinse is a lot less frusterating than going over the whole car, trying a get all the dust from all the little cracks.
i use primarily menz powergloss for compounding and i too will do the whole car in my first step and then follow it up with a rinse to eliminate the risk of reintroducing swirls. i mean hey, our line of work involves being meticulous in all aspects, so why no take the extra ten fifteen minutes to re rinse/wash. just my opinion.
