I need to know which backing plate to use on the porter cable 7424 xp for wet sanding.

any input would be greatly appreciated. looking for a 5 incher if possible with lots of cushion behind it.

I have a 3m one I use with the Trizac system. It attaches just like a normal bp.

That link is for the 1500# sanding disc. I also have 3000#. You will need their backing plate as well as its different velcro than we use on regular bp's and pads.

Not to thread jack, but is wet sanding with a PC easier than by hand? I really want to learn how to wet sand so I can remove some of the deeper deffects in my paint. Any writeups or tips for a total beginner wet sand?

In the autobody industry back when I was a painter, we used to wet sand all the time using a rubber black sanding block and wet or dry 3m paper. You would want to use something that is flat as possible for all the flat surfaces to help keep the sanding uniform and the paint straight with no dips, etc, in it.
Those black 3m sanding blocks are sold everywhere, I think I have seen them at Home depot in the paint section.
I suppose you can do this with a PC, but you need to be able to control your cutting and keep the paper disks from heating up and disintegrating on the paint.

Believe Meguiars also sells a whole line of sanding disks, paper, etc., for use with power tools maybe both PC and Rotary ?? I dont know for sure.

For me, if it wasnt like having to sand down a whole vehicle, etc., I would use a rubber block and wet or dry paper and a hose to wet while you sand.
You want to think about what you are trying to accomplish here - are you wanting to remove orange peel, or a blemish on a spot or area, or what? Because once you start, you are setting the look for the rest of the paint ahead of you. You dont want to have to come back, start over, etc., if possible..
Are you sure you have enough paint to be able to remove some and then remove more when you compound out the sanding scratches?
Get the highest grit possible to finish, believe its at least up to 3000 grit now, possibly higher, and this will make compounding it out easier.

    Good luck with this.

DanF, although the title and Carfax don't say my car was ever in an accident, I honestly believe the entire righ hand side has been re-sprayed. Who ever sprayed that side did a wonderful job and it would take an incredibly trained eye to tell. There are a couple drips, orange peel and some clear coat peel, but this is ofcourse all very minimal which only myself can spot.

I am a perfectionist; I want my paint to be absolutely perfect. I do not own a paint meter, but really want to do this sometime instead of haivng it re-sprayed. I could do a multi-step correction via my PC, but it still wouldn't look quite as good as I really want it. We will see, it definitely will not be in the bear future. I wish there were a member on the forums who lives in Az that would be wiling to help me and teach me!

How about checking in at autopia.com and Live2Detail, and see if anyone at those forums lives close to you and has experience in what you want to do? Hopefully someone close by will have a paint meter and that alone will help you see how much more or less material is on that side compared to the other, and go from there..

If I was anywhere near AZ I would be glad to help , but I am at least almost 2000 miles away. Sorry..

I too am a perfectionist and have had many black vehicles in the past and have only 1 today. There is nothing that looks nicer when cleaned and polished to perfection than a black vehicle, but unfortunately, that perfect look is fleeting at best. :)
