Parent's new ride - Turboless 3 Series

We have a sweet relationship with our local BMW dealership and were able to turn in my dad's E92 335i lease a year early to ink a deal in an E91 328i Touring.

For those that don't know the new F30 3 series is replacing the E9x as the base BMW model (BMW's bread and butter car). As an avid BMW enthusiast family my dad and I feel the new F30's turbocharged inline-4 will be a serious letdown in the long run.

After already replacing the HPFP on the 335i a buyout of the residual didn't seem like a good idea. Plus we want a more practical car than the 335i coupe; to replace my mom's 325i wagon that is about 10 years old now.

My dad and I think this will be a pivotal moment in BMW's life. Under pressure to enhance emissions and efficiency compliance, the move from large displacement naturally aspirated engines to smaller, forced induction ones will be detrimental to the long standing reliability of BMW.

We imagine after the warranty expiration a lot of new FI BMWs will have some serious (read: expensive) issues deeming them less than desirable as a daily driven car.

With that said we rushed to get this last-batch E91 on order (as the E90 - Sedan) is already out of production.

Since the previous 335i was so boring on it's black on black color combo I convinced my rents that the combo of Space Grey over Saddle Brown would not only be classy BMW but unique and enjoyable too. Having very few example specimens on the web as a reference we went in with the allocation without knowing the outcome.

My dad delivered the car this past Thursday and I returned from a trip to check it out in person.

    The result?

    Spectacular.

Gorgeous! I hope to see more pics, especially of that interior. I wish I could get an estate, but my wife is very much against them. I think it's mostly Americans that don't like station wagons, as Europeans love them.

My mother's 335i canvertible has the same colors, by the way: space grey with saddle interior.

I disagree. I like the new turbo 4. Obviously its not the traditional BMW engine, and the purists wont like it, but I think with this engine it makes it more of an atttractive car to other people in the marketplace other than the pure BMW fans. With the sucess of the 335i it doesnt surprise me there going this route.

I'm waiting to see how the new turbo works out. Still, there is something about a straight six BMW that's special.

    Bump.

I took the wagon on Saturday and gave it a wash, decontamination, lightly polished with Wolf's Chemicals Shine & Seal, and sealed with two coats of Body Wrap.

This has very hard clear coat, as evident by the lack of imperfections; I spotted only one hairline scratch in the entire car. Due to time constraints I didn't really take any photos through the process, but there really wasn't anything to show. In total it was 4hrs of work.

This is the second set of wheels he received for the car.

Looks good. I have about 110k on my 335i (N54) and it's running super strong with some supporting mods. Hopefully it'll last until the new M3 comes out.

I want to try out some Wolf's prod...need money first. :shakehead:

Nice work. Love the color combo.

Not sure I agree about FI = More money. From my experience the biggest problem with German cars is everything but the engine. Also, actual turbo failure seems to be something of the past. FI also offers much easier, cheaper, and greater gains for tuning enthusiasts. I can see where a long standing BMW customer could have a problem with FI, and I can see the hesitation one would have when going with a turbo BMW since the company is relatively new to the technology when compared to others...

That is one sweet color combo. I would drive that any day but i do prefer a turbo vehicle. Im just a boost junkie.
