I have been told that most new cars don't feature a primer in the traditonal sense because the build quality of the metal is so good now, that there is no need. Old school primer was sprayed thick to hide imperfections (about 1.5 mils) where as most new cars leave with an etching primer of roughly .5 mils.
so if what you're saying is true on all of this stuff... then a car can only be polished so may times in a life time before you damage the intregrity of the clear coat
Bear in mind that a clear coat has a thickness of 1.5 – 2.0 Mils, removing more that 0.3 mil (0.0003") of clear coat will cause premature paint film failure. As a point of reference two sheets of Saran wrap placed on top of each other measure 1.5Mil (0.0015") a surface scratch that will `catch' your fingernail is approximately 0.004" deep will usually require wet sanding and refinishing. There comes a point when you must judge wither removing a scratch will compromise the clear cot and if so you’ll have to ‘live’ with the imperfection and/or cover it with a glaze EDIT: Its also worth noting that the UV absorbents migrate to the top of the clear coat, so one you remove too much clear you'll have no paint UVR protection other than what you apply with a LSP
