Paint Guages - Any "How-To's"?

Was wondering about paint gauges and how they are used in detailing. I know what they do, I'm just curious as to how people actually implement them. I've read descriptions of people taking dozens of readings on a car before polishing and mapping out the paint, but where do you go from there? I mean other than noting potential problem areas (thin CC), are there other uses to this type of mapping?

If anyone knows of any good How-To's or explanations I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction, or... if someone here wanted to draft such an article I bet I'm not the only one that would be interested in reading it.
