I am looking to get a new car for family, day job and weekend detailing, and wanted some opinions.

What I am looking for is:
    Cheapish
    Roomy (wagon)
    Effecient
    safe
    still enjoyable to drive.

    My obvious main options are:
    Subaru Impreza
    Audi A3 (normal and diesel)
    Jetta Wagon (normal and diesel)

What are your thoughts on these cars? Any others fit the bill you would like to recommend?

I would also look at the Mazda3/Mazdaspeed 3. Subies have very soft paint and are a PIA to keep swirl free, IMO.

I agree. A Mazda3 sport/hatchback or a MazdaSpeed3 for some real fun driving. MS3 comes only in manual.

With what you listed I'd go with the A3. Subarus have hard paint to deal with. The Jetta is assembled in Mexico and has terrible paint. I could post a video of a serious issue that made it to the news here, but it's in French. so the Audi is the last one left and I'm not familiar with any issues.

You could always look into an Accord CrossTour that's a few years old.
