Keep in mind that I know absolutely nothing about cameras. I only got one because you guys are picture whores!! I have a Fuji Finepix S700 and am very happy with the pics I get from it. My question is, how do I get away from noisy pics taken in low light? All my pics taken inside seem to be very grainy.:shead:

can you put up an example?

    Are you using flash?

Are you hand holding or on a tripod? In low light conditions hand holding gets pretty tricky as the time it takes to get a good shot makes camera shake a much bigger problem.

Are you shooting in full auto? If so give aperture priority mode a shot. You just set the aperture where you want it depending on the depth of field you are looking for and the camera will take care of the rest.

Your camera is probably putting the ISO at full boost in low-light circumstances. That is resulting in very grainy pics.

 P1et said it well, ISO plays a huge role in poor quality pictures.

turn down the ISO and use flash... but flash usually sucks... you can also turn down the flash too. I usually take pics in ISO 200 with 1/16 flash if I need it. then use Photoshop to adjust exposure later. Take them in RAW of course... :)

Also there is a good chance that your camera is underexposing the scene slightly. While high ISO is the main culprit for a noisy image, trying to recover shadow detail in post processing is also a big issue especialy in low light instances. Bump up your exposure by 1-2 stops higher than your camera recomends and you should get some better results. If your camera lets you review the histogram make sure you are getting as much information in the scene to the right of the histogram as possible without clipping the highlights. See this article on exposing to the right for more information.

    Expose Right

there are a few programs out there that can help to a certain degree but if you try to use it too extensively your pictures can turn out flat or not as sharp as before.

Off the top of my head I can only think of Noise Ninja. I will post the names of the others i've used with good --> great results.

higher ISO number = more noise, try using flash

this isn't always true...a pic takin at 200 ISO that is under exposed ....is going to have more noise than a shot taken at 400 ISO that is properly exposed

Alot of people are scared to crank up the ISO because of fear of noise...

Shoot at a smaller aperture lowest shutter speed possible and dont be scared to use 1600 ISO...it will look alot better than an underexposed shot at 800 ISO

Tripod with lower ISO would be my first approach, but I am no expert ;)
